Russian schooner, chartered to carry cargo from "Carpathia" to London... and once again Hollywood shows how some trivial facts should never get in the way of a "good" story. You know, trivial, like geography, history, mathematics, all that nonsense... sometimes I'm amazed the Americans still get the planet they live on right... or do they? |
Actually a good point: the only ship that could dock by the "Carpathia"n mounts... would be a zeppelin. |
Correct. It should read 'Romanian windjammer' as The Carpathians are in Romania (with its northern end in Ukraine, Slovakia and Poland). And the ship is a cargo windjammer, not a schooner. Our world is getting dumber every year. |
What you fail to realize Guest-8660, is that there is no "Carpathia" and never was. The Carpathians are a mountain range stretching from Czechia down to Romania. And "Dracula", aka by his true name Vlad "Draculea", because of his family crest, a dragon, never bought any houses in London. You may wanna try real books. |
Dracula is a fictional vampire very loosely based on the Prince Vlad you mention. His purchase of a house in London is the entire plot of the novel by Bram Stoker, which is not only a very real book, it's a freakin' classic. This isn't Hollywood's story, it's Stoker's. |
Oh thank you Guest-8660, why didn't I think of it! What should I start with? Marvel's History Almanac or World Geography in American Vision, by DC Comics? Maybe The World Atlas, Hollywood edition 2023? |
I find it hard to see Stoker's Dracula as a "classic". He wrote it without ever setting foot in the place and by using fragments of lore from the Balkans, in blatant contradiction to even what said lore was claiming. But the bourgeoisie of the day took it, just like people nowadays take any Hollywood trash. |
Okay people, let's focus please. The original post has a valid complaint: A ship can arrive at a port in London, but cannot depart from a port called "Carpathia" there are no cities with that name by the sea, it's all made up and breaks the suspension of disbelief. The real historical Prince Vlad is different topic. |
I'm sorry but for the life of me I cannot understand the mindset of someone who is watching a movie about vampires and complains that the usage of a made up city "breaks the suspension of disbelief". what?? you guys are so neurotic! |
Guest-1638, would it seriously surprise you if not everyone who left a comment watched the... "film"? Maybe some just wanted to state their opinion? Put that under the lid and let it simmer. |
The ships departs from the port of Varna in Bulgaria. This a is a real city. It is also as written in the original book. Try watching the movie before making a dumb comment |
Yes, mad more sense to release this a week or two before halloween. |
"Sad to see this one lose money in the theaters." Comment made on a torrent side. |
That's not so strange, I still sometimes (rarely these days) go to theaters and regularly buy films to support the good ones (4K UHD). |
can't find any subtitles for the Romanian dialogue, anyone got a line on one? I prefer to know what everyone is saying (specially if it's lengthy chunks of dialogue) |
Just says [speaking romanian]? God I hate when they do that. |
Thanks for the movie GalaxyRG Nice A/V as ever and I found it entertaining. The argument over whether the historical, geographical and ethnic diversity accuracy of a made-up chapter, based on a fantasy of gothic horror, seems rather pointless to me; with the exception that it does tend to reveal the irrational bias of some, against their fellow human beings Thanks again GalaxyRG Much appreciated as usual |
Thank you for a review, agree who cares about historical, geographical accuracy, its a horror movie not a factual documentary. |
You rarely read many debates on the geographical locations of Metropolis, Gotham City, or Wakanda do you? But stretch a truth for creative purposes in other scenarios, and you get a heated debate... weird in a predictable kind of a way |
What?! Next you'll be trying to tell me the movie poster isn't an actual photograph, but rather an artistic rendering! |
Oh, I'm so sorry Moxie... and you know all those movies about Santa Claus? Well... |
What? Darth-Vader-style-NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! |
People interested in authenticity, internal consistency and the importance of being true to the spirit of the source material, will care. If the box says chocolate, and you open it to find some strawberry mixed in, then you'd be justified in your complaint. |
Very good film, I've just finished watching it. Great pacing, great acting and great atmosphere and set. We've had a lot of Dracula films, and it was good to finally have one from the viewpoint of the crew of the doomed Demeter. Very much worth the time to sit and watch. Adding this one to my keep list. |
Did you really think so? I went in with high expectations, as the director had previously made the brilliant 'The Autopsy of Jane Doe'. I even enjoyed 'Mortal'. This was mostly disappointing. It was too long, the characters were woefully underdeveloped, and Dracula himself seemed generic. Average horror. |
I kind of tread half-way between you guys. IMO A/V was as good as I'd expect; acting was all something I could engage with; and I was fine with the timing. It was also a nice idea to explore what happened on the Demeter, but "Dracula" was a bit a of a let-down, and the end was a movie begging for a sequel. |
Thanks for the upload, the director is great so i hope it's something |
Forget all of the other complaints about schooners, windjammers, carpathia, etc. This was a boring movie, and I liken it to Meg2 where it's mostly about Humans, not sharks or in this case vampires. The last 10 mins was ok, but the rest of it was booooooring. |
Brilliant. Been waiting for this. Efforts much appreciated. Thank You. |
Watched last night & loved it. |
It's a clipper, not a schooner or a windjammer, please count the masts period. |
