 | Watched it. What makes May December a captivating watch is not the subject matter, but the acting. Both Moore and Portman know how to nuance deeply flawed characters. A complex character requires an experienced actress and the best actresses respect their characters without exploiting them. Moore is perfect for the role. She portrays a woman who is deeply disturbed. What makes the performance so powerful is how convincingly she portrays her. She peels back the layers of childhood trauma and abuse but never gives her character a free pass. We grasp the etiology of her pathology all the while abhorred by what she refuses to acknowledge. Portman's performance is elevated by pitting her against Moore. She deceives us into believing she is seeking “the truth” all the while languishing in the sickness and the devastation.. Some people are sicker than others, and these two actresses show us just how sick they are. |

It´s based on the story of Mary Katherine Schmitz Letourneau Fualaau, who in the mid-1990s was an elementary school teacher in her thirties who raped Vili Fualaau, a 12 year-old student. In 1997, she pleaded guilty to two counts of felony second-degree rape of a child. Fualaau and Letourneau had two daughters together and, after she was incarcerated for several years for her rape of Fualaau, they were married; the marriage lasted from 2005 until they separated in 2019, and she died of cancer soon after that |
