Nobody likes teacher Paul Hunham (Giamatti) -- not his students, not his fellow faculty, not the headmaster, who all find his pomposity and rigidity exasperating. With no family and nowhere to go over Christmas holiday in 1970, Paul remains at school to supervise students unable to journey home. After a few days, only one student holdover remains -- a trouble-making 15-year-old named Angus, a good student whose bad behavior always threatens to get him expelled. Joining Paul and Angus is head cook Mary (Randolph)-an African American woman who caters to sons of privilege and whose own son was recently lost in Vietnam. These three very different shipwrecked people form an unlikely Christmas family sharing comic misadventures during two very snowy weeks in New England. The real journey is how they help one another understand that they are not beholden to their past-they can choose their own futures.

 | It's listed under comedy and drama. I think it is more of a drama than a comedy movie and it is a great drama. A teacher has been entrusted to baby sit a student that lead to a journey of discovery. Very touching at times. Very good movie. Really enjoyed it. 7/10 star rating. Thanks for sharing. |

| Aspect ratio didn't bother me too much. Though I have an oled so the bars are really dark and hard to notice. I imagine the decision to use the ratio was to match the aesthetic of the period which was faithfully reproduced in a number of other ways. It felt like a time warp and I quite enjoyed it. |

| Ive always enjoyed Paul Giamatti and as soon as i saw his name no question Im going to watch. But it was not funny, well the first hour anyway so got board as I do with drama`s and watched something else. It hasn`t put me off Giamatti its just hes a serious actor. nut I guess you go where the offers are. |

| This is an amazing movie so DO NOT listen to the nay-ers who only watch action/shitty movies for teenagers! I only kept 4 movies made this year and this is one of them. Meaningful movies with great acting are hard to find so do yourself a favor and watch this one. You only need to be attentive and smart and have a decent sense of humor and this movie will make you forget all the bad movies you watched this year. ;) |
