| Once again, jaxe's 'cut-and-paste' facts are entirely incorrect. Here's my own 'cut-and-paste' proof:
In his book Spitfire: A Test Pilot’s Story, Supermarine chief test pilot Jeffrey Quill describes an experiment in range extension. A Mk IX Spitfire was fitted with a 75-gallon rear tank plus a 45-gallon drop tank (presumably a slipper) for 205 gallons total. Quill flew a non-stop return flight from Salisbury Plain in southern England to the Moray Firth in northern Scotland. Owing to poor weather, the journey was entirely made below 1,000 ft, which is not the most economical cruising altitude. Distance covered equalled the East Anglia to Berlin return sortie of the Mustang.
Spitfire fighters achieved similar distances to the Berlin mission during the War but only on ferry sorties. Mk Vs were flown from Gibraltar to Malta, a distance of 1,100 miles, ie equal to the England-Berlin round trip. A total of 284 gallons was carried: 85 gallons in the standard fuselage tanks, a 29-gallon rear fuselage tank plus a 170-gallon drop tank. The route was first flown in October 42 and the aircraft landed after 5¼ hours (210 mph ground speed, there was a slight tail wind) with 40 gallons remaining. The drop tank was not jettisoned and the average consumption was 4.51 ground miles per gallon, ie a maximum range of 1,278 miles in those conditions. A&AEE estimated the range of the Mk V with both the 29-gallon and ferry tank to be 1,624 miles assuming tank jettison (5.72 ampg); the range gain of 27% emphasises the drag of the big slipper tank. Achieving escort fighter range with the Spitfire was clearly possible.
This proves that Spitfires COULD, THEORETICALLY, have flown over Berlin - even though they did not, at least until after the war.
This film may not be very good, or entirely factually accurate, but it is only that: a FICTIONAL film - which means that the viewer is asked to suspend their disbelief for a couple of hours.
One is not smart - I'm not that smart - if all one can do is to critisice and plagiarise other people's research (as I've just proved) to make yourself appear cleverer than you really are. This movie (not good, btw) is not based on theoretical fact, but on theoretical fun - incorrect though it is. You need to research better, longer and harder, jaxe. At least the sound of the Spitfire's Merlin engine will bring a tear to a WWII plane spotter's eye  |

If anyone have ever watched any film from the beginning of time when it was first invented and watched anything that resemble accuracy in the detail to the actual facts as it happened then that person has been living in his or her personal cuckoo land. First of all give thanks to the kind people who put them here for you to watch and secondly they films are only made for entertainment and if anyone takes any of it seriously should have some therapy to vision the world as it is. |

 | No Spitfires has ever flown over Berlin during the World War 2 before Germany surrendered. Spitfires did not have the range to reach Berlin from England. Not even the Spitfire Mk V and MkI X with a 85 Imp gal internal fuel tank and one 90 Imp gal external drop fuel tank, taking off from the furthest southeast England airbases, was able to reach Berlin and back with their max range of 980 miles. The U.S. Army Air 8th Air Force assigned to bomb Nazi occupied Europe and Germany, taking off from bases in England did not have long range fighter escorts to fly with them from England to Berlin and back. They 8th Air Force suffered heavy losses of B-17s and B-24s until March 1944 when the P-51 Mustang was introduced which had a range of 1,650 miles with a 224 Imp gal internal fuel tank and 2 external 90 Imp gal fuel tanks. The lack of suitable long range fighter escort is also the reason why R.A.F. Bomber command only flew bombing sorties over Germany and Nazi occupied Europe at night. |

| yes it is all true...Never one Spitfire reach in his dreams Berlin .. It is a beautiful flying machine but they have his limits , in the same thing happen into the Brittain Battle with the Me-109 messerchmitts , not enough to reach london, enter in battle and return. |
