| The tipping culture is out of control. This happen to me yesterday. Had dinner at Chinese restaurant, by meself. I have seen this before on Reditt (example) https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinfuriating/comments/x20klm/this_restaurant_added_a_20_service_charge_for_a/ and Tik Tok but never experiences it meself . I had the wonton appetizer and the chicken lo mein and soup is included. $14 for lo mein and $6 for wonton Total is $20 and they added tax, making it close to $22. Then there was a line below it showing 20%, no writing saying it's a tip, a fee, nothing. Just 20% and it's taking 20% from $22, not 20% of $20. At bottom they suggested tip with the smallest amount at 20%, then 25%, then 30%.with those percentage taken from the full amount that included the 20%. I took out my iPhone and calculated the 20%, 25%, and 30% because I was suspicious they were incorrect. Every amount listed are rounded up to the dollar: even numbers with no cents. I had the menu on the table and there was no 20% service fee printed in it. Restaurant was busy. I left cash for $20 plus tax and because I didn't have any coins, I left $22 which is more than the actual amount. I did not pay the 20% or added a tip. I am aware many restaurants add a tip for large groups, some restaurants do it with groups of 6 or more, 8 or more, some 5 or more. But it's always printed on the menu. This tipping is out of control now that every business has a tablet or terminal at the cashier for the customer to swipe their credit card, there is always a tip screen on those tablets. You go to Starbucks and get a coffee and the screen is asking you how much you want to tip. I am not tipping for a coffee. The person behind the counter at the dry cleaner is expecting a tip for 5 minutes of taking your dry cleaning ticket and finding your clean clothes and bringing them to you. The Chick Fil A fast food drive through they come to your car with the tablet to take your credit card and there is a screen asking how much tip you want to add to the total amount. I have even seen the tipping screen at the supermarket Self Checkout. So I am tipping myself then. That tip goes to me? Uber and Lyft now wants tip. I don't tip the driver if I am not going to or coming from the airport and the driver helps me load and unload my luggage. I took a Lyft home months ago when my car was being repaired. $23. When I got home I got a notification on the Lyft app saying my account is temporarily suspended due to violating the rider terms of service, Call a phone #. I called and they said the driver reported me for one of the things that gets a rider booted off the service: consuming alcohol or illegal drugs in the car, having children that requires a car seat and not bringing a car seat, possessing prohibited items like drugs and guns, refusing to wear a seat belt. I told them I did none of those and that driver was just upset I didn't leave him a tip for driving me home. Also during the entire trip, I was trying to be polite making small talk about weather and other non political non religion non inappropriate subjects and he didn't talk, didn't even say hi when I got into his car or say thank you when I got out. CBS news made a report about it 2 days ago. https://www.cbsnews.com/video/tipping-more-for-services-leaves-american-customers-frustrated-survey-shows/ Last edited by jaxe on 2023-06-10 18:57:25 | |

| Good on ya jaxe Only person I tip is a waiter/waitress in a restaurant, and only if he/she treats us well. I don't use self service check outs at all, if they want me to check out my own shopping then they will pay me for my time... never gonna happen so will never use them. | |

| I use self check out because many supermarkets requires cashiers to keep an IPM (Item Per Minute [scanned]) rating or they will have their hours cut. So the cashier scan everything so fast and you can't keep up with the price on the screen. Then when you ask, excuse me how much was that so and so item, they get upset because stopping their scanning your items to go back up the screen to see how much an item scanned for, it affects their IPM. Using the self checkout and scanning my own item, I can see the price for each item and catch incorrect prices or even incorrect named items: for example at Walmart once, a $9.95 pack of socks show up on the screen as $34 pair of jeans. Also many times cashiers have scan the same item more than once so you are charged more than once. Believe me, I go to the supermarket every week to shop for my family and every week I catch at least one or two incorrectly priced item at the self checkout especially items that are advertised for sale for that one week. Imagine how many millions $ supermarkets and retailers are making off customers who don't pay attention and their items are scanned at the wrong price or scanned more than once. | |

| In my eyes self checkouts keep folks out of a job, no self checkouts means more manned tills. We always check the receipt before leaving the building and if there's a problem then off we go to the customer service desk where it is rectified and they also give you some kind of compensation, could be a voucher/cash or wrongly priced item/s for free. But yes, supermarkets must make a killing from folks not checking there receipt/bill. | |

| Maybe If Everyone Was Prepared to pay more for their items and services - These businesses could pay their employees proper wages, thus negating the need for tipping or service charges. Here In AUS Our Minimum wage is about Three times higher than The USA, this means tipping is mostly seen as voluntary. Much less to worry about when paying your bill! | |

| Do you you really think they would give up even 1% of their huge profits just to pay their employees more? Yeah, well for some people it isn't as simple as just "getting a better paid job" | |
