Too many times I have found myself constantly adjusting my TV while watching a movie or TV episode cause everything looked unnatural, dead and like sheet.

Why spend millions $ to CGI the color out of everything and f up beautiful scenery and backgrounds?!?

Think of all the millions of $ they will save.

They should apply the so called "gray" look to CSI Miami, cos that show got more colour in it than a family sized bag of Starburst...

I have to agree, a lot of shows and films these days are trying to go for almost a sepia like picture or look to it. Its got me thinking they want the audience to feel like they're watching something overly daunting or gritty.
The article mentioning the comparison of old and new Dexter is a great example. The bright vibrant colour that the show originally had was actually one of the things that hooked me. I understand that its now gone from sunny, hot Miami to a dull cold wilderness New York (no offense to those that are there),but the reality is,its still bright in those parts too, even in winter.
I remember watching Pleasantville and being blown away by the concept and colour imagery (the movie was meh).
I think its just a sign of times we're going through that films are going for that almost instagram toned filter look on certain projects. Some of these can work well and others can look disapointing.
I love watching films in black and white, also love bright vibrant colours ,and I dont mind the stonewashed sludge look from time to time. That being said, we're also living in a time where our technology is improving, we're moving into a generation or 4 & 8K tvs - we as viewers deserve to see bright colours and tones and rich blacks on our pictures.

Sorry for the ramble... tl;dr version: I agree with the article a lot, and our tvs are made for better colour these days

The term "Colourist" is a fad title new to the film industry.
All cine post production has Colour Grading applied after editing.
This is normally an effort to colour match scenes either side of transitions.
This whole idea of using a "Colourist" is quite bizarre as it is usually the director who has the call on this.
It's probably applied to a Colour Grader(s) (always women*) who works with digital effects to enhance colours and perhaps textures under the director's supervision.
Usually, colour palette, temperature, hue and saturation are the responsibility of the production designer, cinematographer and art director with the colour grader providing finishing tweaks post edit to iron out lighting flaws.

*Genetically, women have better colour vision than men

reckon it would be great to have that old type 50`s-60s` 70`s technicolor back into todays films. Those colors were so vibrant and crisp it felt so unreal to give a truly movie like experience.
