No, Macbeth was not black, but as others have said it was Othello, who is a black Moor. There are explicit references to his racial appearance in Shakespeare's original text, despite arguments that he was just an Arab. Black people also appear in Titus Andronicus. OK? I'm a big fan of Denzel so I don't really care, and in the main I get the distinct impression he has no tolerance for victim narratives, just as Malcom X—whom he portrayed—hated it too. So when Denzel portrays a white character I have no issue, the way I would if those black actors who might try to use the casting to heighten rather than heal division might. Both sides of the political spectrum want us divided because that way they can predict our voting patterns, a system of herd control in other words. And make no mistake, Hollywood does their bidding. Let's stop listening to the crap from both sides... |
Shakespeare is rolling in his grave. MacBeth was a Scottish man and definitely not African. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macbeth_(character) |
Imagine if someone created a movie about a Zulu King and made the king white! Imagine the outrage- the movie's creators wound be shot in the street. And yet the opposite is not only acceptable it's required. If we want equality I'm absolutely OK with that, but movies such as these are not helping the cause. It's as bad as going to websites selling clothing and now every model is black. Employment opportunities based on skill colour now? Government business loans only for people of a certain colour? Anyone seriously think think this is going to help promote tolerance and equality ..?? |
@ Guest-2367 Yep, the Wachowski brothers or is is sisters? (I can never quite remember ) must have read Mcbeth (maybe for High School ) , read those lines 'The multiplying villainies of nature Do swarm upon him' , 'Disdaining Fortune, with his brandished steel, Which smoked with bloody execution' and thought 'that's darned good (and they ARE darned good ) , and squirrelled it away in their tiny brains and regurgitated it when they were writing V for Vendetta, but squirrel brains like the Wachowski brothers or is is sisters? (I can never quite remember (Have I already said that? ) are forgetful so they forgot to credit Shakespeare in their movie |
Othello (or any other Shakespeare) is not a book you would ordinary pick up as a kid But they all form part of our English Literature syllabuses And for that we should be grateful for that as we learn how magnificent the Bard's writings are His plays are excellent I have played these characters on stage My favorite lines from McBeth and maybe the whole of Shakespeare's canon is (I know them off by heart ) " Doubtful it stood, As two spent swimmers that do cling together And choke their art. The merciless Macdonwald (Worthy to be a rebel, for to that The multiplying villainies of nature Do swarm upon him) from the Western Isles Of kerns and gallowglasses is supplied; And Fortune, on his damnèd quarrel smiling, Showed like a rebel's whore. But all's too weak; For brave Macbeth (well he deserves that name), Disdaining Fortune, with his brandished steel, 20 Which smoked with bloody execution, Like Valor's minion, carved out his passage Till he faced the slave; Which ne’er shook hands, nor bade farewell to him, Till he unseamed him from the nave to th’ chops, And fixed his head upon our battlements. Part of which was in the movie V for Vendetta |
Yep, pronounced Otello But imagine the 'outrage' if Othello was play by a white actor And for the record he never has But you never hear anyone complaining That is how grating and pathetic this 'woke' nonsense is |
A correction on above: Laurence Olivier played Othello. Film available. Saw it in the movie theatre when in high school. |
Just for the record. "Othello" is the play with a black lead. Excellent play, I might add. One of my favorites. |
A lot of Shakespeare movies are filmed staged productions You only find that out when you fire up what you are expecting to be a movie I have watched a few on here, Romeo and Juliet for one |
This is not the only McBeth that mysteriously slipped into V for Vendetta. In fact V for Vendetta and McBeth are 'heavily correlated' (even down to the dialogue ) Or to put it more bluntly - V for Vendetta is a rip-off of McBeth. But how many of the Wachowski's fans know this? Answer: None. Imagine watching a Shakespeare play and not even realising it. |
I don't care if its a black man playing the role of Macbeth - Denzel is amazing in most films hes cast in. I'll wait til there's a better copy, but I'm hyped for this though |
