Plot:
Porter is bad, but his neighbours are worse. Street-wise and tough, an ex-marine, he is betrayed by a one-time partner, and shot in the back by his junkie wife. He survives and returns, looking to recover his share from the robbery of an Asian crime gang. The money has passed into the hands of "the Outfit", a slick gangster organisation that runs the city. He has to make his way through a world populated by heroin dealers, prostitutes, sado-masochists, gunmen and crooked cops, a place where torture is a way of life. His only friend is a former employer, a prostitute, and her loyalty is in question, given she now works for the Outfit. He makes good early progress, but then falls into the hands of Fairfax, the crime boss.

 | My advice is to give this version a Hard Pass. This is one of the times where the Director's Cut is demonstrably inferior to the original "commercial" version. Some directors are so full of themselves they want to ignore all the test screenings and bull-headedly power through with their vision, even if it sucks. Thank God the Studio prevailed in this case and forced this version to be released, The original, theatrically-released version was criticised by film snobs because it has a voiceover. But it's precisely that narration that makes it such an excellent modern-day noir film. The original book the story was based on ("The Hunter", by Donald E Westlake, writing as Richard Stark, and featuring his super-popular hero, "Parker") came off masterfully in the original film version, and is head-and-shoulders better than the earlier James Coburn mess, "Point Blank". The original theatrical version is actually one of my Top Ten Favourite Films -- definitely on my Desert Island list. I urge you to seek it out if you haven't already seen it. Probably Mel Gibson's best work, IMHO. |

 | I think the MAIN reason for THIS version is that Brian Helgeland, the named director, was FIRED by the producers  and replaced with Paul Abascal 3/4 of the way through. THIS is what Helgeland would have released  , which is 10 minutes SHORTER than the original (all Kris Kristofferson's scenes were cut). |

| This version is finishing with a cliffhanger, it's like 2-3 minutes from the end are cut off. I think the first theatrical version is better. |
