"I met her outside an Automat. I guess I wanted to test myself. I wanted to know if I had it in me to do those things. Maybe I HAVE lost my mind, but whoever I am, I'm still me, and I'm NOT a killer." Alex Proyas best work. Rufus Sewell, William Hurt and Kiefer Sutherland gave some of their best performances of their careers in this. RIP William Hurt, great loss for film. Having said that, I didn't like the director's cut where Proyas removed Keifer's voiceover at the beginning. I don't give a flying wotsit what the critics say, it made the movie's opening with the ominous music and Keifer's portentous delivery. As it did with Blade Runner: raspberries to Scott for axing the voiceover, it was quintessential Chandleresque noir when it had the voiceover and a lesser, more sterile film without it. I know I'm in the minority here; don't care. The fascinating and terrifying world of the Dark City, the poignancy and inhuman cruelty the story unfolds... The profound questions of identity based on memory that it raises, echo some of the themes of Blade Runner while being its own dark, menacing entity... There's no doubt in my mind this is one of the best damn science fiction movies ever made. |
I'm going to disagree. I much prefer the director's cut. Keifer's voice-over was always unnecessary; it was never what Proyas intended. Ironically, I do like Ford's voice-over for Blade Runner. I will agree that this is a brilliant SF/horror film. 10/10. |
@Brrzrrkrr each to their own I guess. I'm glad you agree on BR, I would say that we shouldn't always assume the director knows best. Some can be self indulgent as well as talented. I think the producer's or screenwriter's instincts are sometimes the right ones. |
I've always wished that they made a sequal for this, even prequal. I'd love to know how it all started and what ended up happening after he gained his powers |
Awesome film. If you are new to this, you are in for a treat! |
This was Melissa George's first theatrical movie role and one of only 3 times she appears fully topless in a movie. |
