Watched it. Episode one. Clive Owen exec produces and portrays the chain smoking detective Sam Spade. He portrays Spade as charismatic with heart as he attempts to locate a home for a child all the while solving the brutal murder of several nuns. The problem is the setup. As the episode unfolds we are introduced to several new characters, this is where the complexity and the confusion begins. The dialogue bounces between French and English in rapid succession not always allowing the viewer enough time to digest the narrative. There is also extensive banter between characters which can sometimes get tiresome and lacks the feeling of maturity that Bogart brought to the character. |
Amazingly, most people can keep up with French translated in English subtitles just fine. Just admit you what the main character to shoot everyone including the child and not say a word. I for one am goint to enjoy this. Thanks to the uploader. |
@CG, a quick après-vu verdict would be great, s'il te plait, to balance this little argument :) |
I enjoyed the first episode and had no problem bouncing between English and French. |
Any modern TV series without a mobile phone in it is a good thing. This would imply that the characters are using their own brain. |
Trailer looks great and like Clive Owen so I will def give this a go https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_2vj49Zs2Q |
Now, now Guest-3174! There's absolutely no need for that kind of immaturity here considering the simplicity of the thanking comment above! Go away & mature for a couple of decades before making any more comments here please. |
Great first episode! However, I just don't have the patience to wait for the once a week release of episodes. So I'll leave it now for however many weeks it needs, to be over, and enjoy watching them closer together. |
Looks interesting, but Owen was in that awful series recently about murder that I am trying to forget ever happened... |
According to the plot outline above, Spade is "infamous." Is its writer trying to imply something, or is he/she/it merely borderline illiterate? |
I'm American, and a fan of Dashiell Hammett's Sam Spade character, so it took me a few minutes to get over Clive Owen's english accent, which, it's seems like he's not even trying to mask, but the story's premise of Spade tracking off with the orphan child of Brigid O'Shaughnessy, from the Maltese Falcon to France, kept me interested. Great 1st episode, IMO better than True Detective's 1st of season 4., which was all over the place trying to flesh out the characters, while being very ambiguous abt the actual case. They should have made each episode at least 90 mins to accomplish both, being there are only six episodes this season. That fact alone, may come back to bite them in the ass. I'm definitely interested in the continuing exploits of Hammett's legendary gumshoe. I'm still a fan the TD series, Jodie Foster being attached to this IMO means it should be good. She's a great actress and director and has been very shrewd in the past on what projects she attaches her name to. On the strength of that, I'll watch and see where it goes. Thx TGxTV |
