avatarIt's interesting how the same characters like to divert a movie discussion into one in which they can propound their own ignorance. For example, the comment referencing a homosexual character: "They aren't born. They are brainwashed and indoctrinated into it. Just like... religion." Excuse me for abbreviating the quote slightly. Of course it's highly possible that a queer person may have met someone like the one that wrote that comment, and decided that they wanted nothing to do with such a creature (understandable), and thus became gay. But science says it's a bit more complex than this anti-queer stance would pretend it to be.

A few older studies have pointed to genetic links to homosexualtiy, for example:

Hamer, D., Hu, S., Magnuson, V., Hu, N., & Pattatucci, A. (1993). A linkage between DNA markers on the X chromosome and male sexual orientation. Science (American Association for the Advancement of Science), 261(5119), 321–327. https://doi[dot]org/10[dot]1126/science[dot]8332896

Pillard, R., & Bailey, J. (1998). Human sexual orientation has a heritable component. Human Biology, 70(2), 347–365.

But frankly they are old now, and superceded by at leat one—far larger—study, which looked at 477,522 individuals.

Ganna, A., et al. (2019). Large-scale GWAS reveals insights into the genetic architecture of same-sex sexual behavior. Science (American Association for the Advancement of Science), 365(6456), 882–. https://doi[dot]org/10[dot]1126/science[dot]aat7693

They found that "there is certainly no single genetic determinant... Rather, many loci with individually small effects, spread across the whole genome and partly overlapping in females and males, additively contribute to individual differences in predisposition to samesex sexual behavior." In addition, the authors stated that "several of our results point to the importance of sociocultural context as well" (p. 6). So, to the best of our scientific knowledge at present, samesex sexual behavior would be the result of a combination of genetics and environment. The interaction of these two factors remains largely unexplored.

Blanket statements to the contrary are thus ignorant of established evidence, and whilst everybody should have the right to voice opinions based on ignorance, there is an ethical obligation to challenge that ignorance.

avatarWe (less ignorant) are aware of the fact you are what you are, regardless of what you are told to be, so expounding this study you've obviously been working on is a little trite for a simple movie like this.
I'll happily talk it with you sometime, but not required here.
(impressed by how far you've studied btw)

avatarThank you malingo. I was responding to a comment by another member (see our PMs) that was deleted by a mod. I try not to let biased ignorance go unchallenged. Biological sciences are my day job, and I'm very lucky to have whole electronic libraries of primary research (with very few paywalls) at my fingertips.

avatarTo be fair, these studies are confirmation bias. The reality is that sexual attraction is opportunistic in all animals, including humans. The same binary dilemma you affix to those who are against gays works both ways; nobody is inherently one sexuality, but they do have strong affinities ...

avatar1147: I would disagree completely. All three studies address legitimate, original research questions, and the papers have undergone a full peer-review process. Please substantiate any of what you say with equivalent evidence.

avatarFunny detail: no matter how hard and how often you guys pass on movies like this, there will not be any less lgbtqia+ in this world. On the contrary: one more born every few seconds. Have a nice life!

avatarCould be some lessons to learn in this film. Dude is living part of my old life. I married an asian girl, ex #1. The cultural differences are just one more struggle in the marriage. Ex wife #2 was a Kansas white girl, dirty blonde. 22 yrs together and still ended. Ben should just marry Miko and be done with it. He should also not take relationship advice from me.

avatarTo be fair, fiction will always be as twisted as their author's heads, both in the East and West. As such, if there was anything to be learnt about relationships here, it would be in the comment sections, from actual people and actual relationships ...

avatarI dated a latina. Learned spanish to impress her and her family. Her dad convinced her to drop me for a latino. Married an asian. That's on the ropes. Now I have a best friend since high school who is quietly showing me that she's willing to give herself totally to me. I wish I was in love with her.

avatari just never understand the need to "qualify" a film with statements like "queer grad student". It seems to me that, taking that tact is either targeting or alienating potential viewers which ends up limiting those viewers before they even get a chance to actually get to make an informed opinion based in an actual watching experience. I wonder how many people, regardless or a films plot story or casting, simply dismiss a film out of hand solely based on reading a description. Surely JAXE might be more vocal about his opinions and even honest about how he arrives at his conclusions, but surely he isn't alone in that or his personal preferences. I know I struggle at times not to personalize some of the comments I read here. I also do try to share my experience and base that experience on having watched something. I've even watching something just because so many people dismiss or claim to hate it....

avatarSo it's the fault of the person who describes the plot and uses words that might bother some people? And that makes sense to you? You don't for a moment consider why people ARE bothered with some WORDS? Like: it's the tree's fault for running into my car?

avatarIs the grad not being 'straight' NOT a significant and relevant part of the plot/story? If it is a notable part, then its right it should be noted. If it aint - it shouldn't.
by Guest-3292
    on 2023-09-14 15:26:45
avatarVery unfortunate choice of words, Guest-3659. Your last words should read "it needn't", not "it shouldn't". Saying "it shouldn't" suggests it's WRONG to say it. Well, there's nothing wrong with it, but you're right when you say there is no compelling REASON to say it when there's no relevance to the story.

avatarSpent half an hour trying to watch and engage - ended up skipping through and deleting. Not engaging in any way. A few moments that weren't boring is about the best I can say.

avatar@LiberalLesbo: I'm not doubting his experience, I'm objecting to the fact that he claims that "THEY ALWAYS take what they want". Sorry, LiberalLesbo, I don't know your experiences either, but I'm absolutely positively convinced that NOT EVERYONE takes what he/she/they want. One person is not EVERYONE. I for one will not force anyone to be submitted to my lust when obviously not interested and so will most straight and also lgbtqia+ not force anyone. Not every straight person is a rapist and not every lgbtqia+ is a rapist. Are there bad apples? Sure, like there are bad apples everywhere, within every segment of society. Therefor it's nonsense and worse: reprehensible to suggest that every lgbtqia+ will everytime force you to submit to him/her/them whenever he/she/they want anything. So yes, apologies are in order.

avatarAgreed, even “yes” to the apologies in order, but I — personally, and it really is just a personal thing — wouldn’t push a sexual assault victim to apologize for anything related to their experience. It’s an emotive issue that changes how you think.

avatarI used to respect all people, but in this day and age I was fired, because I was victim of sexual harassment by a homo sexual 20 year older colleague, whom thinks himself as a Diva and gets away with anything. Now I see them on tv protesting and teaching children about sex change or other none school material studies. (Btw, please excuse my bad English, I'm Dutch.) They protest and shout "We're here, we're queer and we come to take your children". Regardless what I had to go through, I'm not homophobic, though I don't want to consider talking to one, to be honest, there are really bad, jealous, manipulative bad apples I don't want to meet ever again. I can never trust them again and I'm the nicest guy honest and sincere guy you could ever meet. But I'm telling you from personal experience, of a same sex person likes you, they always want something and if they cant get it, they get jealous and take you down. Be warned.

avatarIt's awful that you had that experience 3357, some will always abuse relationships for whatever reason. Homosexuals are no more likely to offend against children than heterosexuals. Jenny, C., Roesler, T., & Poyer, K. (1994). Are children at risk for sexual abuse by homosexuals ? Pediatrics (Evanston), 94(1), 41–44.

avatarI rake offence at your line "if a same sex person likes you, they always want something and if they cant get it, they get jealous and take you down". 'They' as in 'all of them'? 'Always', really? Guest-3357, your bad experience with ONE person does NOT say anything about ALL lgbtqia+. Your apologies are in order.

avatar1636, I'd agree completely, with the exception of the apologies. They would be nice I think, but if the allegations are true -- and you can never take anything for granted online -- I would be tempted to make allowances for a survivor of sexual abuse/harassment.
