Sadly, no version of this story will ever surpass the BBC dub of the classic Monkey TV series from the late 70s. |
Money Magic what happened to Pigsy |
A pink chimp with a rainbow spitting cane. You can't make this shit up. |
Here is volume 1, this includes the poetry, trust me it is as good as Shakespeare: https://archive.org/details/wu-cheng-en-the-journey-to-the-west-revised-ed-volume-1-epub-rocky-45-cpul/Wu%20Ch%27eng-en%20-%20The%20Journey%20to%20the%20West%20%28Revised%20ed%29%20-%20Volume%201%20%28epub%29%20-%20Rocky_45%20%5BCPUL%5D/page/n307/mode/1up?view=theater Click the 3 dots on the left to download BKWSU |
This is based on one of the greatest novels ever written https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journey_to_the_West There has been dozens and dozens of adaptations of it on film and TV but it's impossible to do the whole book because it's 100 chapters in 4 sections https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_media_adaptations_of_Journey_to_the_West Hopefully this one will be good. |
Journey to the west was basically a Buddhist/Chinese sequel from the Hindu/Indian Ramayana epic. They renamed Hanuman to Sun Wukong and then sent him on a thousand adventures with Buddha, a pig and a bunch of other people. |
If you watch it let me know what you think, I trust your judgment. I'll go to IMDb to watch a trailer, but sometimes that doesn't even suffice. |
I will watch it tomorrow, AFX, buddy. My girls have volleyball tournament today. |
The IMDB trailer of this movie basically covers the worst part of it. I thought it was another underdog trying to be hero kind of crap, but it isn't. It actually covers most of the original story of the monkey king, in a Kungfu Panda way. Fun to watch! |
There's an entertaining -- although much abridged -- translation of Wu Cheng'en's 100 chapters here... ... for anybody who wants to get a feel for the text. I don't think TGx has an unabridged version, but they're fairly widely distributed. |
There are no unabridged versions, in any medium, in any language, outside of Mandarin and Cantonese. |
OK 7292, you probably know more about that than I do. I'll re-phrase to say there are translations which claim to be as near an English language approximation of the 16th century Wu Cheng'en text as they can get, and they are fairly widely distributed. |
I did buy the 4 volumes, it includes the poems. But basically it is a comedy, a religious satire - it takes fun of religion! One of the 4 masterpieces of Chinese literature also check out The Watermargins a 2 part series which is based on Outlaws of the Marsh. Maybe as popular as the original monkey series BKWSU |
It's more of a shot at bureaucracy than at religion, though in China at that time, the two were almost entirely interchangeable. The versions without the poetry are better, as it's widely agreed upon that Wu was a terrible poet, and that the poems are by far the worst thing about the work. |
Journey to the west has absolutely no connection whatsoever. It's hilarious and don't know where your assumption come from. |
Title: The Monkey King (2023) Genre: Animation, Action, Adventure, Comedy, Family, Fantasy Perhaps is good I've no idea but I won't watch it. Thawne |
