Steve Gibbons is a very big man in old Birmingham rock. He first became known in the group UGLIES, which is very appreciated by lovers of the ancient "brahm-beat". UGLIES are interesting because they also included Richard Tandy, who later left for ELO. There was also Dave Morgan, an occasional writer for THE MOVE, a friend of Carl Wayne and Jeff Lynne. Bassist Trevor Burton left UGLIES after THE MOVE. After UGLIES, Gibbons led the legendary Birmingham supergroup BALLS, which, in addition to him and Burton, included such citizens as Denny Lane and drummer Alan White. BALLS quickly disbanded and Gibbons joined IDLE RACE, which had been quietly winding down since the departure of Jeff Lynne. When IDLE RACE finally folded, the STEVE GIBBONS BAND arose from their wreckage, to which Trevor Burton also migrated. SGB vegetated for five years until Pete Townshend noticed them and helped with the contract. And apart from Gibbons' '71 "almost-solo" album, these are their first albums. John Entwhistle also helped work on the '76 album.
