Thank you GalaxyRG for an another good, solid movie. Audio and video are excellent as usual, and like I said, the movie is really good, but it didn’t quite tick my “great” boxes. The cinematography is great, there are shots that look truly beautiful at times. The acting is very good indeed, but I didn’t think the actors had the best dialog to work with, and the story of the boxing was, at best, secondary, to the irrational, anti-gay violent bigotry, that any openly queer person will experience from the foolish and small-minded. This is a love story of two, perfectly normal people, set amidst the mindset of small-community ignorance. And that was a bit of my problem as well, the town gets painted as rather stereotypical. That may be true of New Zealand small communities — I have no idea — but I felt it probably did them a disservice. Most small communities I have experience of are not quite as bad as this is depicted. As a result, I came away thinking “nice story, but a bit stilted and stereotyped”. So, not great, but pretty good for a slow week-night. Thanks again GalaxyRG Always appreciated |
It can be true of the Maori portions of the community but while it's not really discussed, they represent about 17% of society and the reality is that Maori culture is little more than a tourism thing. Except to them... The small towns you talk about are usually of low population and mostly related families. |
Hey, they gotta have their movies, too. At least this one doesn't try to hide it's gayness to ambush audiences with it part-way through the film and doesn't seem to be a propaganda piece. I won't watch it 'cause it doesn't interest me at all but I'm not opposed to it's existence. It's a gay love story that doesn't pretend to be a mainstream movie. Recognize that and just move on. |
Thank you for your well meant words. But do you realise how much of what you said is awry? The movie isn't gay, it's about people being gay. No movie ambushes an audience, they reflect the fact that lgbtqia+ generally don't wear tags irl either. A movie about gay people is as mainstream as any other movie. Etc., etc.. |
But it's NOT a mainstream film, it's a niche film. Its only appeal is to a narrow segment of the movie-watching public. Media often ambushes people with the unexpected or controversial ("The Crying Game" springs immediately to mind). But, please, do enjoy your film... |
Says who? The movie "only appeals" to a segment because it is about that segment? You do know that white males are a minority in this world, yet ninety percent of your "mainstream" movies are about exactly that minority. What makes you think you are mainstream? You are a niche as well, as we all are, everyone is. |
I just want to put this out there, check out the top comment Likes / Dislikes, then check out the complaining comments Like / Dislikes. Should be enough said for most. TY FOR THE UP!! I'm a straight white male, AND I APPRECIATE SOME COLOR IN MY LIFE! Taste the rainbow. |
And from my angle TG, it's refreshing to see someone who is secure enough in their own sexuality not to feel their ideals challenged by a little 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🦄🦄🌈🌈 |
LL, it's not about being or not being secure in one's sexuality. Broccoli disgusts me. I won't eat it but accept that some like it. 2 guys making out disgusts me. I won't watch it but accept that some like it. Personal preference -or are straights not to be allowed that in your world view? |
1684 - I did not refer to "all" anti-gay comments/commenters, in fact I made no sweeping statements at all. Just that I found a particular scenario "refreshing". If you find that somehow "challenging" in some way, I would look at your own "world view" not mine. Go with 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈 my little |
Get used to the fact that we are as much part of your society as people like you are. We are here and we are here to stay. |
It didn;t even stop you from commenting… |
Always great to see Tim Roth but this is a rather unexpected and strange movie to see him in |
Propaganda for what? For becoming gay? "Join the gay force now!" 'Turn gay within the next five days and watch Netflix for free!" "Convince your neighbour to become gay and win an all-in exclusive trip to Lesbos!" That kind of propaganda you mean? |
Plot: Jim is preparing for his first professional fight but begins to rethink his life's trajectory and his sexuality after tangling with Whetu, a gay Maori boy who spends his days in an old shack down by the beach. What's going on with the World? I don't get it. Remember when we had, Rambo, Rocky(Sly), Jean Claude Van Damme, Arnold Schwarzenegger and many others... Now everything needs to either black, gay, or another diversity part of the NWO/woke agenda... sighs... Numbers don't lie, Top Gun Maverick made more than a 1 billion, John Wick IV was a huge success and many action films, why? because they made the film with passion pure action and not for this snowflakes generation that think that the world was began in 2000s -.-' Huge Hard pass. Go watch Rocky franchise instead. |
Don't worry Thawne, there are plenty of your straight white male movies to go around, and if you don't like the current ones, just check out the THOUSANDS OF OLDER MOVIES FOLLOWING THE SAME TREND. The only problem you'll have is if you're homophobic or racist. Seeing as how you have a problem... |
So Thawne, you have to share a tiny bit of your spotlight with the rest of the world and that's asking for too much? It has to be all yours? No room for anyone else but white macho men? Even you yourself say that your movies are still being made and are still successful. So what's your problem? |
You say that like you'd have watched it if it wasn't. which we all know you wouldn't have. You'd still have found something to whine about. You're a serial whiner. Nursing Fuc*king kittens don't whine as much as you do jaxe. |
