Howdy folks! This looked interesting and there are many (actually a few too many) rave reviews on IMDb, and once again, I disagree with most of them. I suspect (but can't prove) that many of those 10/10 reviews were written by people who either worked on the film or got paid. With that in mind, here are my impressions of Major Grom: Plague Doctor For a made-in-Russia Superhero flick, I'd give this an 'A' for effort but only a 'C' for execution. The cinematography, acting, sets and FX are all top-shelf, and it tries hard to be funny - but the humor falls flat. Maybe lost in translation? And while the idea of a Superhero without any superpowers is intriguing, it just didn't 'wow' me much. More good news / bad news: The action scenes are good but there aren't enough to keep the tempo going, so it kind of dies a slow death about halfway through the whopping 2 hour and 18 minute runtime. And the audio is dubbed, which doesn't help. As the end credits are rolling, they hint at a sequel but I won't be holding my breath. The A/V is excellent, as usual, and English subtitles are included - if the dubbing gives you a headache. Rating the movie 6/10 for a good first effort at creating a new 'homegrown' franchise, but at the end of the day, I'd call this a 'niche' film for Superhero geeks and fanboys of Russian cinema. For everyone else, it's a bit tedious and lacks the 'punch' needed to be successful with international audiences. Ground Control to Major Grom: Take your protein pills and put your helmet on. Thanks, GalaxyRG. ☮ PS: The original Russian language version has been posted. |
i think kentk9 says it all and on the nose. i can imagine this doing well in russia but barely registering across even the rest of europe. not even sure this would get mentioned at the cannes film festival. not bad, but not great either |
This was an ok watch for me. Plenty of eye candy & thrills. One odd thing was seeing a done in Russia. Felt like a Hollywood action Cop flick was being mimicked or something. Mildly amusing! It had it's moments but went Shoot Em Up Overdrive mode around 3/4 of the way thru. This was really annoying for me! But to each his own... Don't think I'll be watching the sequel. |
