The world is stunned when a group of time travelers arrive from the year 2051 to deliver an urgent message: Thirty years in the future, mankind is losing a global war against a deadly alien species. The only hope for survival is for soldiers and civilians from the present to be transported to the future and join the fight. Among those recruited is high school teacher and family man Dan Forester (Chris Pratt). Determined to save the world for his young daughter, Dan teams up with a brilliant scientist (Yvonne Strahovski) and his estranged father (J.K. Simmons) in a desperate quest to rewrite the fate of the planet.
La guerra di domani, film diretto da Chris McKay, è ambientato in un futuro distopico, nel quale l'umanità è impegnata a scontrarsi con un'invasione aliena. Alcuni viaggiatori del tempo provenienti dal futuro, di preciso dal 2051, giungono nel nostro tempo per portare un'orribile notizia: trent'anni dopo la Terra rischia di essere sconfitta dalla minaccia extraterrestre. Il messaggio di allerta, infatti, annuncia una violenta guerra, che vede il mondo schierato contro una feroce. Per provare a salvare il futuro dell'umanità, gli scienziati escogitano un piano in extremis nella speranza di vincere o almeno a lottare fino al limite delle possibilità.
La loro idea è arruolare uomini del presente e trasportarli nel futuro per combattere la guerra, che non li riguarda direttamente ma che li coinvolge emotivamente. Tra le nuove leve c'è un uomo, Dan Forester (Chris Pratt), un insegnante di liceo, che sente su di sé la responsabilità dell'esito del conflitto, soprattutto perché spera di donare alla piccola figlia un mondo migliore. Insieme a lui c'è anche una scienziata in gamba (Yvonne Strahovski) e il padre di Dan, Slade (J.K. Simmons), con cui il soldato non ha contatti da tempo; l'insegnante-soldato, infatti, oltre a fare i conti con il conflitto globale, dovrà affrontare anche i fantasmi del suo passato
