| Oh yeah, and Brit actress Jessica Barden who was in the recent offering 'Hoffer' also does a convincing American accent  Jeez, imagine popping up in small-town Ohio with a Yorkshire accent I suppose Sean Connery (and Ewan McGregor) would have some 'backstory' to cover for it |

| Ewan McGregor is like Sean Connery in that he still holds onto his Scottish accent Jeez, Sean Connery went as far as playing a Russian submarine commander in a Scottish accent Many Brit actors can do a convincing American accent  Just off the top of my head Jessie Buckley, Carey Mulligan and fellow Scot Kelly MacDonald who also does a convincing Aussie one (Dirt Music) I don't know if it is just sheer laziness and they think they can get away with not bothering (I suspect that this in Connery's case ) or they are not able to ( I also suspect this in Connery's case ) Or maybe they are just in love with their original accent but this is the movies after all. And anyway, an original accent is still better than a hashed attempt at one  |

| I noted the names Ewan McGregor , Val Kilmer so downloaded this I had a quick flick through it. Ewan McGregor appears in the first few minutes and then seems to disappear I didn't spot Val Kilmer, wouldn't know what he looked liked without his Batman disguise The violence and action seemed to ramp up as it went along I suspect it may be a rip-off of 'Layer Cake' which starred James Bond - Daniel Craig I heard the sequel is 'Madeira Cake' |

 | The sound. WTF is with the terrible, terrible audio aspects of this movie? The atrocious score (you know - the music that is not "music") drowns out the dialog every time they meet. This is not your "cool Michael Mann" flick 80's synth background music - it's garbage noise (not being hyperbolic right there). The soundtrack portion also has nothing of value being either southern strip club trap bs or ancient standards that my grandparents wouldn't be able to identify (still... no hyperbole there) The allure of this movie was the kid who played Bruce Wayne in the Gotham series, Bracco, Kilmer, and McGregor, Sorvino, and some other decently known\identifiable actors. Outside of NYC and its surrounding areas most wouldn't understand that Birthday Cake does actually do a pretty good job of depicting what "regular" underworld can be like there. Not everything is The Godfather or Casino. Still... the story is not memorable or profound and there is not much action. The viewer has no real stake in the outcome. Only folks in that lifestyle would even likely find this entertaining. Too bad really, a lot of promise here let down by the script and production. Rip: 9 Movie: 4 |
