In the summer of 2005, Druid Theatre Company presented the first ever staging of John Millington Synge’s entire theatrical canon. This ambitious collective presentation of all six plays in the same day fulfilled a long-term artistic commitment by Druid’s artistic director Garry Hynes to re-evaluate and re-engage with one of Ireland’s dramatic giants. This mammoth project was filmed live by Wildfire during production.

Summary

Deirdre of the Sorrows is a drama from Irish playwright John Millington Synge first performed in 1910 by the Irish National Theatre Society at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. The plot is taken from the Ulster Cycle, the most significant work of Irish mythology from the pre-Christian era. The titular Deirdre is one of Ireland’s most prominent tragic heroines: from birth, she was prophesied to possess a beauty that would be the cause of much bloodshed. Synge, a prominent poet and playwright of the Irish Literary Revival, died of cancer at age thirty-eight while still writing the play. Deirdre of the Sorrows was posthumously completed by Synge’s fiancée, Molly Allgood, and William Butler Yeats.

My notes

This is another of six plays of JM Synge performed by DruidSynge Theatre and directed by
Garry Hynes.  Some were on Vimeo and I did the capture and recodes.  Some of the
originals like "Playboy of the Western World" in this series had a bad aspect ratio
(image pinched and too tall.)  Free software allowed me to recode to a proper
aspect ratio for better viewing.

 The plays would benefit from someone who knows how to write subtitling from the
JM Synge play texts which are widely available and, no doubt,  in translation as well.
The play is in Irish 'cadence' English but need the aid of a written script.

 I captured these simply as another outlet for classic works which may become unavailable
elsewhere.











Garry Hynes founded Druid in 1975 with Marie Mullen and Mick Lally and has worked as its Artistic Director from 1975 to 1991, and from 1995 to date. From 1991 to 1994 she was Artistic Director of the Abbey Theatre, Dublin.
