June was once a known counter-culture figure, but that was a decade ago. She now lives alone in her South Bronx apartment, having all but cut herself off from the outside world. It's the notorious "Summer of Sam" and June only has to look out of her window to see the violence escalating with the brutal summer heat. The city is on a knife's edge, a pressure-cooker about to explode into the incendiary 1977 New York blackout riots.
L’ora del lupo, film diretto da Alistair Banks Griffin, è ambientato a New York nell’estate del 1977, meglio nota come “Summer of Sam”. E’ infatti in questo periodo che si intensificarono le attività omicide, nonché i messaggi rivelatori, del famoso serial killer statunitense David Berkowitz, altresì noto come “Son of Sam”. In quell’estate di forti tensioni sociali, l’ex esponente del movimento della Controcultura, June Leigh (Naomi Watts), osserva quanto avviene in strada dal suo appartamento del South Bronx. La donna è affetta da agorafobia, per questo motivo non esce mai di casa, utilizzando come unici mezzi di comunicazione con l’esterno lo spioncino della porta e l’interfono del palazzo. E’ proprio attraverso quest’ultimo che un misterioso interlocutore silenzioso inizia a tormentare June, citofonandole ossessivamente, senza mai proferire parola. In tale contesto, June si isola sempre di più tra le mura del suo appartamento mentre la città è ormai una pentola a pressione pronta a esplodere...
