Summary of the play (from another source)

Presents a dramatization of William Shakespeare's play in which a Danish prince avenges the murder of his father, the king, by killing his uncle Claudius who murdered the king, usurped the throne, and married Hamlet's mother, Gertrude. Hamlet, considered the most complex of all Shakespeare's characters, examines the fundamental issues of justice, guilt and death.

My Notes.

Each director of the Globe brings something new and different.  The tenures of Dominic Dromgoole and Emma Rice came before Michelle Terry  also  who stars in this production.  But she is not new to the Globe.  Previous Globe performances are Love's Labor's Lost (on my file share group on the index) and the first of  Globe  media- released Midsummer Night's Dream as Titania.  Elsewhere Terry has performed with The Royal Shakespeare Company in their Loves Labor's Lost and Much Ado About Nothing ( which they called Love's Labor's Found a number of years ago.)   You see a full range here.  Like a musician who develops a sound recognizable anywhere, Terry has that recognizable quality unique to her performance style.

Other members of the this include Jack Lasky  and Pierce Quigly who plays opposite Terry in Midsummer Night's Dream as Bottom.  There are  other players from previous video of Globe live performances and it's enjoyable to spot them as they return in new roles.

This play was  shown is released during the world shut down of performance venues in response to the virus.  Here is where I usually say go get a DVD for your library.  But in this case, support the Globe as you can on Globe Player which is a streaming service at the Globe site.

avatar"...Michelle Terry’s politically correct novelties transform Hamlet from a tragedy to a farce. In one of his best-known and most frequently quoted lines, Hamlet instructs the audience that “The play’s the thing wherein I’ll catch the conscience of the king.” But the conscience on display here is that of Michelle Terry, who demonstrates a reckless disregard for the genius of the text itself by presuming to superimpose her own vision on top of and in place of it. This is a shame."
