Here's some: “Addiction and substance use disorders (ASUD) have presented a challenge to public health for decades. In the modern era, a resurgence in efforts to address ASUD has occurred due to the expansion of risk and prevalence of addiction in non-traditional ASUD populations. Many people hold stereotypes about persons with addiction and substance use disorders (ASUD) in which a person can “fit” a profile based on race, intellect, financial, or national origin. ASUD stigma and stereotypes not only perpetuate unrealistic notions of addiction, but they also create barriers to persons seeking healthcare treatment. Addiction response varies between persons the same way that other chronic diseases manifest differently between persons. The role of genetics, heredity, physiology, psychological, and environmental influences can increase or mitigate the severity of addiction and the impact of substance use. The strongest mitigating factor that increases the probability of a successful outcomes from addiction is the interaction between financial resources and access to healthcare. Persons who have access to resources including housing, income, employment, and social support have better recovery outcomes and are perceived differently than persons without resource access” (Parker, et al., 2022, p. 680). | It's choice at first but people do gradually become addicts...So if someone is addict he should look Drugs as illness rather than choice because he can't control himself. And should take help of A.A and other resource that are available. For Normal Person - It's Choice, For an addict it is Illness which needs to be taken care of before it's too late... | |

| Hello my fellow pirates! I'd like to chime in on this current poll topic if ya'll don't mind...😉 I myself am a recovering addict, who has battled with addiction for over eighteen years, that is until I decided that I had had enough of repeating the same cycle of losing everything over and over again, just do it all over again. Over countless detox's, impatient treatment centers, residential after-care programs, half-way houses and outpatient treatment programs they all were a complete waste of my time and would result in returning to use. For me, this is because I hadn't really ever wanted to truly stop for good. Instead, I was just sick and tired of dealing with the consequences of my actions. Once I had fully committed myself to living a different lifestyle and making the necessary changes, for the last 8 years I have been clean from opioids. Typical situation really, following surgery on a weight-lifting injury to my elbow, I was prescribed painkillers and even while in full blown denial, was 100% addicted and stopping was not only an option but stopping meant feeling the worst I have ever felt in my life. Now, whether someone is predisposed to becoming an addict or an alcoholic because of a parent being an addict or alcoholic is beyond my understanding but I do think that maybe there might be some truth behind it. As others have said, I also agree, that it all starts with a choice but then it turns into an illness that is very hard, if not impossible for some to break from completely. I do think though, that anyone can live a life free from the substance that was causing their lives to be unmanageable but only if they truly have had enough, hit their rock bottom, which is different for every individual and fully commit themselves to living a completely different life than they had, cutting the necessary people out of their lives for good and making the hard, difficult choices to change whatever is needed to and then recovery is possible. So for me, it's not a simple one way or another answer. There's a lot of grey area on that aspect. Anyways, a bit over the top and maybe a little too lengthy for it's purposes, so I do apologize for that. I'll get off my soapbox for now. Thanks for letting me add my two cents!
