Why do they keep posting stuff in x265? Many folks don't have computers or laptops that can play x265. Some folks might only have a phone or a tablet to watch stuff on, they don't have a laptop or a desktop computer. I know x265 will not play on an iPhone, I have an iPhone. I don't know about other phones' capability.

Whenever I see a show in x265, I will have to find it somewhere else in x264.

Sometime if it's a BBC show, I have to PM another member here who has access to BBC and ask him if he could get it for me in x264.

I have troubled him many times in the past couple of years and in the last 3 days, I have asked him twice because these group keep posting new TV shows and documentaries in x265:

https://torrentgalaxy.to/torrent/14502963/BBC-Mothers-Missiles-and-the-American-President-1080p-HDTV-x265-AAC-MVGroup-org-mkv

https://torrentgalaxy.to/torrent/14505697/BBC-9-11-Inside-the-Presidents-War-Room-1080p-HDTV-x265-AAC-MVGroup-org-mkv

It's like the Classics movies. https://torrentgalaxy.to/torrents-hotpicks.php?cat=2 All in x265. Some of those movies I don't have or some I never seen but it will be a waste of my time to get them. They don't play on my computer.

I use the latest version of VLC and it won't play x265. Someone here a while back recommended some free player saying it will play all x265 without needing to get the latest computer and it still didn't play x265.

I have a 2GB video card and 8 GB of RAM so I don't think it's my computer.

It makes more sense to post everything in x264 so everyone can enjoy it.

If you post stuff in x265 only, then only a small group of people can enjoy it and you are alienating the rest of the members here.

Should make it a rule:

everything should be in x264 first. If you want to post the same movie or TV show episode or documentary in x265, go ahead.

When a new movie comes out, we have them in choices of SD, 720p, 1080p, 2160p. I don't see them only available in 2160p.

I run into a likewise problem.
When I played those kind of files on my old TV.
It happened to both 264 and 265.
It didn't had to do with the HEVC type but with the audio codex.
You should check the mediainfo of the file and try several different versions of the same upload (if there of course) and see which ones are working.

Potplayer plays everything without K-lite, i use it from years.
Working ok on my Poco too. Download from here, https://potplayer.daum.net
install and play, so simple
x 265 will be the next used codec

This? https://codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_full.htm

Install it and all it did was replace an older version of MPC.

It did nothing to VLC.

Also the new version of MPC it just installed also does not play x265

Those who have Pc and Laptops have storage issue for x264 files since they have larger file sizes than HEVC encodes, in short people need x265 encodes more than the latter, its more manageable for folks with limited storage, so more preference to HEVC encodes. The fact that it is supported by few devices is inconvenient, mostly in Android TV, Tabs, I phone ect, But i been using Pot Player for years on my Pc, and like Csabaxb said it plays almost any thing and they have dedicated codec packs for playing many encoding formats, but in TV i use VLC since its equivalent to pot player on Pc, but i prefer MX player on Android TV, the only problem i have is with EAC3 Audio Format, that MX player that does not support it by default on TV,  In such situations, the video will play perfectly but with no sound. Unfortunately, sound problems can make your experience quite annoying and had to do work arounds to get it working but VLC does the job and i am somewhat happy about it. But love the low size HEVC encodes with most common audio formats for effort less enjoyment.
For those who have same problem with EAC3 Audio Format on MX player

Solutions to VLC not Playing HEVC problems

In most cases, the HEVC not playing in VLC errors are caused by computer configuration and VLC settings. Below we have all the proven solutions to those errors, just try the following steps:

• Install K-Lite Codec Pack

Install it under Advanced mode with most of the advanced features it has.
Also, make sure there is no other type of codec files installed in your system that might cause issue.

• Update VLC Media Player

Make sure you're using the latest version.

• Disable VLC hardware decoding

If you leave the hardware acceleration in VLC to automatic, it may apply the GPU acceleration for H.264 streams instead of H.265/HEVC streams. As a result, VLC HEVC playback becomes choppy. The good news is that you can solve this problem by setting the hardware acceleration of VLC on some computers.

First, disable VLC HEVC hardware decoding: Tools > Preferences > Input/Codecs > Hardware-accelerated decoding > Disable.
Second, if the above doesn't work, set VLC to use DXVA with Direct3D11 output or D3D11VA with Direct3D9 output. To change the setting under Input/Codecs > Hardware-accelerated decoding > DVXA 2.0 or Direct3D11, and under Video > Output > select Direct3D11 or Direct3D9 output.

• Check the De-interlacing settings

When VLC won't play HEVC videos, don't forget to check the de-interlacing settings. For example, with DirectX11 encoding on, if the de-interlace setting is set to "On" with Yadif (x2), the HEVC won't play smoothly in VLC. You can adjust the settings: Tools > Preferences > Video > De-interlacing, change the setting to Automatic, or you can select another de-interlacing mode like Blend.

• Upgrade your hardware configuration

Playing HEVC, especially HEVC videos in 4K/8K high resolutions @60fps 10bit, is very CPU demanding. If you have an old computer, your graphic card & processor might be an issue, upgrade the graphics card & processor to one that supports VLC HEVC hardware decoding (more than that, Windows 10 requires more powerful hardware than Windows 7). Besides, during the VLC HEVC video playback, close any other active tasks that may occupy your CPU.

Good luck!

I research potplayer  and there are reports and reviews online as recent as this year that it's full of adwares and it install things on your device without permission.

Even the WIKI page for it classifies it as ADWARE.

HARD PASS!

I been using it for years jaxe, i have not had any issues or security issues, it does not show any AD or install any thing with out permission, it has only periodic updates and Bug fixes. if you want you can check VirusTotal result, only 1 security vendor flagged this file as malicious, its ok when compaired to Utorrent was flaged as malware by windows defender and other anti virus softwares. just my opinion.

Like Prom3th3uS said, it does require cpu power in order to play x265. I have a spare old dual core 1.5ghz laptop, it does not allow to play x264 high bitrate  videos, x265. It very glitchy when I play on it.
Maybe its not the software issue, it might be the hardware giving you the problem.

It would appear you are correct jaxe:_trusted_user::_sitefriend::_male::_sitelover::_junkie::_kitty::_sun::_turtle: , the later versions of PotPlayer do have adware

https://www.videohelp.com/software/PotPlayer#changelog

For no ads you need a version before PotPlayerSetup-1.7.19955-ads.exe dated 2019-08-25
VT for that version
https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/f12cf33d7d9aa2922452db264ffb82cc50fac4abc765553d799720ea465aa6bd/detection

which makes PotPlayerSetup64-1.7.18958.exe dates 2019-06-13 the last one without ads

I still use v 2.2.8 even now, and have never had to install any extra codec packs.

I can tell you that as someone who encodes & uploads regularly, and spends a lot of money on equipment to be able to do so, I have a pretty dim view of people who moan about what they get for free.

Have to agree with the others here Jaxe, VLC plays x265 no problem straight out the box....

If your struggling to find stuff in x264 you could always convert the x265 to x264 yourself, it's not hard.

There appears to be something unexplained going on here, for I am paddling the same porous boat as Jaxeypups,
and have never been able to play x265 with VLC despite having all updates/latest versions.

I would love to know why some can and some can't.
Testimonies here indicate that VLC works with x265 for some but not for others, so ... why not ??

Anyone have any idea ??

now i have an 1650 Gtx 4G, no problem, not need additional codecs/codecpack:_:)

just one from 65, not believe everything you read, the Daum boy make also Kmplayer, very very good, used for years till Pandora bought it and put a lot of adds in .exe. Then Daum make Potplayer which is better, no adds, no adware i say again, no need other codecs
you can make more performance if you set it to work with law filters or madvr, but need more cpu but you get crystal clean picture
trust me jaxe, i know what i talking about from experience, not reddit say:_:)

Howdy m8s!

I have no business contributing to this thread, as my computer skills are akin to a blind monkey, high on oxycontin .... but you're all good buds, so here's my two cents after reading all of the above posts. Csabaxb (and others) are correct: VLC will play x265 right out of the box, without any additional codecs but you need a stronger CPU. More juice, as Csabaxb was trying to explain.

My hunch is that Myob42 and jaxe are both using slightly older PCs or laptops? Am I right?

I have a low-end Dell Inspiron 5580 laptop (almost 2 years old now, with the i5 CPU) and can play x265 videos on VLC all day without any problems.

I sympathize with you, jaxe. It's frustrating as hell when you see a great movie and realize that you can't watch it. You're a good bud, so here's my best advice, based on my beginner-monkey-level of tech savvy: if you're nervous about using other media players and/or adware, which I totally understand, break open your piggy bank and buy a new computer. :_:-) or put it on your list for Santa. Assuming you haven't been too naughty. Probably not what you wanted to hear, but it will definitely solve your problem. Or try RedBaron58's link to an earlier version of PotPlayer - without the adware. RedBaron's solution is definitely cheaper in the short term, but a shiny new computer will make Daddy-jaxe happier in the long term. Up to you!

I downloaded pot player for the fun of it.The VT scan showed 1 flag which from what I could tell was a false positive.I received no infections from it's installation. Also if your system does not have the ability to play 265 files they can be converted very easily .There are many programs out there to do this. AVC is one that I used a while back. Either download potplayer or a converter & your problem is solved.
