| Calibre is a very handy and free ebook management program. You can use it to make a library, but it also give you the opportunity to do multiple things with your ebooks like converting to another format, edit metadata/cover, merge with other books and remove DRM. Calibre can be downloaded here (click on the logo): Adding ebooks: Dragging: The easiest way is to copy the ebook/ebooks directly from your file to Calibre. You can do this by clicking with the left mouse button on the ebook/ebooks you want to add. Drag it/them to Calibre while you press the left mouse button down. Using Calibre button: Click on the "Add books" button to select the books you want to add. Go to the file where the books are, select them and click on open. Or use one of the options in the drop down menu of the "Add books" button. Editing metadata: Metadata contains info about the ebook like title, author, publisher, date of publishing and a summary of the ebook. Ereaders and readers on tablets/phones/pc's can display this info. With Calibre you can change and/or edit metadata of a book. Edit metadata of one book: To access the metadata of 1 ebook, click on the "Edit metadata" button. A window will pop up where you can edit the metadata. Edit metadata of multiple ebooks: You can also edit the metadata of ebooks in bulk. Download metadata and/or bookcover for multiple ebooks: You can let Calibre download the metadata online and add it to the ebooks. You can ask Calibre to download the metadata, the bookcovers or both metadata and bookcovers. Afterwards you can check the downloaded data and decide if you want to add it to the books or discard it. Read ebook with Calibre: Select the book you want to read by clicking with the left mouse button on the title and click on the "view" button to read the ebook with Calibre. Or double click with the left mouse button on the ebook you want to read. The ebook will open in a new window. Saving ebooks to an ereader/file/etc: To safe one or more ebooks to a device or file, select the ebook or ebooks. They will show blue. Click on the drop down menu next to "Save to disc" and choose how to safe the ebook/ebooks. Standard Calibre will save all ebook in a seperate files with the name of the writer. If you want to save all ebooks in one file, choose "Save to disc in a single directory". I have my Calibre setup to save epub, so it also offers to save all epub's in a single directory. Plugins: You can add a number of plugins to Calibre to expand the functionality of the program. Some types of plugins are: - conversion of files - for downloading news (though these are called recipes) - for various components of the user interface - to connect to different devices - to process files when adding them to calibre How to install Calibre plugins from list: 1. Go to "Preferences" and choose "Get Plug-ins to enhance Calibre" from the drop down menu. 2. A new window will open. 3. Click on an interesting plugin to see the info about the plugin. 4. When you have made your choice, click on the plugin so it is highlighted blue and click on Install. 5. A warning will pop-up. Click on yes to install the plugin. 6. The plugin will be installed and another pop-up will open. If you want to install another plugin, choose yes. Otherwise choose "Restart Calibre now" to have the plugin take effect. How to install downloaded Calibre plugins: You can also download plugins for Calibre that are not mentioned in the list. You can find plugins here. 1. Click on "preferences". 2. A new window will open. Click on "Plugins". 3. In the new window, click on "Load Plugin from file". 4. Go to the file where your new plugin is and open it. When a pop-up opens with a warning, click on "yes". 5. After the plugin is installed, you get a pop-up that it is installed succesful. Click on "Yes" or "restart calibre now" to have the plugin take effect. Change language of Calibre: 1. Go to "preferences". 2. In the new screen choose "Look and feel". 3. Another screen will open. Go to "Change language". 4. Choose the language you want in the dropdown menu. 5. Save setting by pressing "apply" and restart Calibre. Enjoy your Calibre in the language you prefer! Convert format in Calibre: With just a few clicks you can convert your ebooks. The types of formats that Calibre supports are: Input Formats: AZW, AZW3, AZW4, CBZ, CBR, CBC, CHM, DJVU, DOCX, EPUB, FB2, HTML, HTMLZ, LIT, LRF, MOBI, ODT, PDF, PRC, PDB, PML, RB, RTF, SNB, TCR, TXT, TXTZ Output Formats: AZW3, EPUB, DOCX, FB2, HTMLZ, OEB, LIT, LRF, MOBI, PDB, PMLZ, RB, PDF, RTF, SNB, TCR, TXT, TXTZ, ZIP The format you need to convert to depends on the device you are using for reading ebooks. It is possible to convert from PDF to another format, but in my experience the layout of the new ebook does not look very well. If you have the choice between multiple formats it is better to use another format than PDF. Although converting PDF to another file is very problematic. Most of the time the converted file will look terrible. How to convert and ebook using Calibre: 1. Select the ebook that you want to convert into another format. Click with the left mouse button on the ebook to select it. The ebook will turn blue. 2. Click on the button "Convert books". 3. A screen will pop up in which you can make multiple choices for converting. 4. Choose the format you want to convert to. 5. If you wish you can make another few changes to the ebook. For example you can set the ereader you are using to make the ebook more suitable for your device. Go to "Page Setup" and select your device. 6. Click on OK at the bottom of the pop-up screen to start converting. The screen will close by itself. 7. At the bottom of the main Calibre screen you will see a job has started. 8. After the job says 0, the ebook has been converted to the new format. Calibre has now 2 formats of the ebook in the library as you can see at the right side when you click on the ebook once. You can now save the converted ebook to your device. Enjoy reading! Last edited by Angelina on 2018-06-07 12:43:14 | |
