| I gave up on external drives some years ago and now use NAS (Network Attached Storage) The big advantage is using Raid 1 or Raid 5 (bottom pic), this means that in the case of a disc failure there is no data loss. | |

| 3.5's and a docking bay or a nice nas hot swap should be a much better bet, those have a tendency to fail, and when they do the 3.5 inside is good 98% of the time... when the unit fails, the most likely cause is there attached pc boards there crap ... those can be cheaper then 3.5's in which case ill buy em and take the 3.5 out toss the case .... wanted to ad the new slims are ssd drives the older lil bit bigger were 2.5's cheaper way out Last edited by Superbikemike on 2022-04-01 19:21:45 | |

| Looking for a cheap usb drive external media player. There are many on amazon such as "neumi 4k" for about 40$. Not looking for something pricey because this is for temporary use on a friends tv that doesn't have built in media player. Reviews dont look too bad on many of these devices but never owned one. If anyone is using any of these players or has recommendations i would appreciate it. (Piggybacking on this thread post because i cant start a topic) | |

| If he has a hdmi connection on his TV he can always give the chromecast a try. Or connect a laptop to the tv if he has one. Another option is to connect a smartphone to the USB connection and mirror the screen. But if it's only temporary... Look for the most cheap solution.. Which is probably connecting a device that is already available. Only need; depending on the device, 1 or 2 cables. | |

| I bust those open and would use the drives inside in a docking bay.. those have there own software and hardware attached to them which have a proven to fail after a period of time where as the drives are still in great condition... however the box its self when it fails it leaves most to think the drive went bad this has never been the case in any of the drives ive checked for people ...so i just order them a docking bay and toss the box i have 3.5's that have lasted over 10 years and the data in them still perfect .... I have over 80tb's on 3.5 drives ... Last edited by Superbikemike on 2024-09-25 16:20:39 | |

| Always pull suspect drives, put them in at least two or three different external housings (in case the housing has a fault), re-partition & format them before giving up on them. Like Mikey, I've got externals being used as part of multi-generational back-ups that go back years, and they're still great. | |

| I have a 4 bay Synology DS 918, and 4 Ultrastar Helium 10TB drives. I also have a couple of 5TB externals for travel, but with Tailscale, I can access the NAS from anywhere, so I hardly use them any more. | |

| Maybe, but at least if you're close enough you'll talk real funny for a while (don't try that at home kiddies) Last edited by LiberalLesbo on 2024-09-26 17:05:09 | |

| I have had these for 6 years now, and no issues at all. If one does down I can always hot swap, so not really that concerned. | |

| I talked funny for 20 years. You need a big breath though to talk funny, wouldnt get much out of a helium drive. | |
