I may need help with my VPN.

My internet has been intermittent on and off for three months now.  Ever since i got my new PC.
Suddenlink is actually laughing at me, because they have checked and cannot see any interruptions in service.
The intermittancy is 24/7, but mostly in my daytime. It will shut down for a few seconds, up to 20 minutes.

I use PIA. I have for 5 years, and never had a problem. But I got to wondering if it may be needed to be set to the Dell I just acquired.
Dell Optiplex 790
12 GB ram
500HDD
Using a Arris 12-channel Surfboard modem, #SB6183
And a Netgear router, older, but works good.
(I tested things without and with the router, same results)

Also, someone said something about port forwarding?
I am not very techie,so I have no idea what that is.

Can I get an opinion on this please?  I'm lucky i got to post this PM. It usually cuts off and destroys my emails and PM's.

Hi there Ron :)

Just saying, If you have another computer, smartphone, or tablet that can connect to the same Internet connection, use it to test if you have a connection issue or a computer issue. If all devices on your network have the same problem with the Internet/VPN it is likely an issue with the cable or DSL modem, network router, or ISP. If only one computer is disconnecting and reconnecting, it's likely a problem with the computer. Check for hardware failures in the computer or issues with the operating system, as these types of issues can result in Internet connection intermittent problems.

i drop by here to help, please excuse is you already troubleshoot the above instruction. Regards!

SaM, thank you for the advice! I already did the substitute computer route.
Also changed out ethernet cables, and used the router then disconnected it.
It is not any of the above.
It acted the exact same as the main one I'm having trouble with.

Funny thing is, my ISP does not see these interruptions.
They actually were laughing at me.
And the really sad part? I called the other cable company in town.
All their slots are filled. No room for another customer where I live.

Well that's pretty odd, ISP have no idea and no room available for new customer. LOL

another advice, did you tried another VPN beside the one you're using since a long time? i mean switch to another VPN maybe it might help to determine any improvement? Check it if possible.

keep posting and be hold i would love to help until unless problems get fixed. let me use my resources and find a solutions folder somewhere in my HDD. i will get back to you soon and i hope someone else will definitely look forward to cooperate. :)

Well, it's fixed. I have had one interruption in four hours.
Not too bad on that. And you would never guess what caused it.
A corrupt copy of Windows defender. It just would not let anything through.

Thanks for giving me some help there, SaM.

I didn't have any problem with my VPN disconnecting.
It was all to do with totally losing internet connection.
The PIA did what it could, but every time I would get cut off, my VPN would obviously, disconnect.

I'm so glad to hear about a fix, Well you're right how do i guess. LOL
By the way it would be great if you do tell me what OS you're running, i can help you to fix that thing permanently no matter it's windows defender or any other built-in program in OS.

Cheers & see ya around :)

avoid site specific owned and operated VPN's. VPN's like this are shady and poorly operated and such when it comes to customer service, not just that but they already have access to enough of your data and personal information. This one will give your details up in an instant if pressured to do so...

That sounds like good advice, cat. I just read an article in TorrentFreak about PIA. (My VPN)
PIA proved itself that they do not keep any info on any of their customers, aside from the usual billing stuff.
https://torrentfreak.com/which-vpn-services-take-your-anonymity-seriously-2014-edition-140315/
No records, nothing.
And the capper is, it's the second time they proved it.
So I consider them a really reputable company, and it seems like my opinion is shared by a lot of others.

SaM, I am running Win7 Professional. I got rid of Defender, went with Avast.
So far, other than isolated incidents, the internet has been functioning well.
Maybe one or two short interruptions a day, which is far more livable than every five minutes.

If your VPN connection keeps dropping when using uTorrent but not when just browsing online, please try following settings in uTorrent to solve this:
  • Go to Options
  • Chose Preferences
  • Click on Connection Tab
  • Uncheck "Enable UPnP Port Mapping", "Enable NAT-PMP Port Mapping", and "Randomize port each start"
  • Click on Apply
  • Go to BitTorrent Tab
  • Uncheck "Enable Bandwidth Management [uTP]"
  • Click on OK
  • Go to File
  • Click on Exit to exit uTorrent
  • Restart uTorrent

Tested at a computer of which the connection kept dropping every few minutes when trying to download torrents using VPN. It's not the VPN itself that is causing this problem but the settings of uTorrent.

Ok, since Angelina:_vip::_trusted_user::_sitefriend::_female::_sitelover::_junkie::_kitty::_sun::_turtle: put up the tip about adjusting some settings in utorrent I'm now downloading at an average of 9MB/s (depending on seeders) and today I hit 10.1MB/s  clicky
sherb is impressed.... so out of curiosity I'd like to know what kinda speeds everyone else is getting behind their VPN.

I can recommend you to check out https://securitygladiators.com/vpn-test-tool/ so you can test your VPN and see if it actually works

Can you recommend VPN that is reasonably priced and allows picking location manually? I'm trying to access this website: https://linko.app/, but it does not open in my country. I believe they are accessible to USA and Asia only.

in todays world there are now things you have to consider,
does the vpn allow p2p connections a lot are turning there back on those and blocking them ..
does the vpn have a kill switch
does it log you connecting or using there product ....
those are 3 of the biggins you have to look at your vpn's tos to learn
the 3 that dont log and allow p2p
    Pia, Trusted, Express ...
now if your seeding none of these are for you , yeah none ...
for people who plan on seeding dont waste your money on a vpn its worthless for you,
something else to consider if you seed is a proper seedbox those come with built in vpn's
so theres no need to worry about a vpn and it gives you the ability to seed and hide without issues ,,
    :_B)

VPNs don't seem to get along with Microsoft firewall but the firewall will keep resetting and activating to default, anyone know how to stop this?

Related question, what is the best browser these days?  I used to use Firefox but it's become a disaster over the years, now using Brave

TrustZone is a good one... very cheap if you take the 3yrs option.. You might even get 3months extra...
Has all those BM mentioned!.. Don´t EVER use those "free" VPNs.. they gather so much about you that you can´t even imagine.. Reddit had an article about those free ones some months ago...

What is that windows firewall keeps resetting? I use OpenVPN + Windows firewall and i have no problem 🤔
    About browsers:
Brave + DuckDuckGo is a good choice if you are concerned with privacy and no Microsoft or Google snooping around your business.
that's what i am using now
