I have a video that I shot of the last family gathering before my father passed away.  It was shot on a Sony DV camera some years ago. I thought it was lost but the other day a copy turned up on an archive USB drive. Now I want to edit it for my last surviving brother and all the progeny.  And this will be by first foray into video editing though I am well skilled in audio editing.

I'd really like to get your opinion on what video editing software for PC I should start with.  The PC architecture is just an Intel  i5 CPU, 6 GB RAM, Standard plain-Jane Nvidia graphics card (about a year old, not sure of the actual specs).

I am not averse to a moderate learning curve, in fact I quite expect it. I am well skilled with Photoshop for my still images. What do I really need, you ask ?  :
    - normal exposure compensation, colour control etc
    -  image stabilization is a must (I have a tremor from multiple sclerosis, so some scenes are quite shaky)
    -  perhaps some sharpness correction ?
    -  ability to stretch video (slo-motion) and/or audio tracks
    -  minimal transitions gimmicks
    -  no special effects needed
    -  Voice-over and background music in sparate tracks while preserving original soundtrack
    -  Titling  (rolling credits, static headliners)
    -  can insert static images (photos with zoom-in/out and pan)

Do I ask too much?  I would not mind getting into more video actually (with iPhone), so maybe I should look at a more advanced editor.
In any case, i'd like to hear Your thoughts.

We all know, the best and toppers are:

Adobe Premiere Pro. The best video editing software overall. ... (Expert level)
Final Cut Pro X. The best video editing software for Mac users. ...(Expert level)
Adobe Premiere Elements. ...(Expert level)
Adobe Premiere Rush. ...(Expert level)
Corel VideoStudio Ultimate. ...(Expert level)
Filmora. ...(Beginners friendly & Expert level)
CyberLink PowerDirector 365. ...(Beginners friendly & Expert level)
Pinnacle Studio...(Expert level)

Furthermore:
Vimeo Create (Web-based editor for social media videos, Beginners friendly)
KineMaster (The best free video editing software overall, Beginners friendly)
DaVinci Resolve (The best free video editing software for colour correction and audio features, Beginners friendly)

And there are many more like, VSDC, Shotcut, Hitflim Express, but the thing is, we always have the option to chose one that suits to our need, considering the top 8, they can handle images, audio, video, great output, superb compression, and amazing features of effects, multiple layers, totally insane, but again, chose one according to your need, every person has their own tastes, especially which software can be handled easily and features friendly, so if you ask me I obviously tell you what seems the best to me or friendly, but that doesn't mean it's the end, might be someone else may suggest something more powerful, but it's not that the software I suggest it's a waste, like I said, what need we better go through reading features menu and basic motive of software, for what it's known best for, image only? Video only? Audio only? This is the main part where we need to focus to pick the best one.

For me, I use all of them but considering my task, sometimes I use old photoshop where my task is to add extra text or remove anything from images, and sometimes I use studio where my task is to handle 3 of them at once, to make presentation video, in fact, sometimes I do online editing via online editors for images,  for dedication videos/images/audio, Camtasia is the best.

So far, I have done almost every type of video editing and mixing, in the past it was Adobe Premier 6.5, and from the last couple of years working on current latest Pro versions.  Cyberlink is also a good one for images to video rendering.

In My opinion, if your goal is images, then after effect is the best, for videos/audio, you can with cyberlink, coral, or even Magix studio, else, from top 8, you can pick one which can handle all tasks :_:)

Good luck!

Movavi Video Editor Plus or Movavi Video Suite might be useful to for learning :) but the above programs our awesome Prom3th3uS:_blocked: has suggested are very good, have used a few myself in the past :) as long as you have a good cpu
graphics card and enough memory especially for rendering videos  then your good to go :) :_love:_love:_love

Hahaha I was in a similar boat not too long ago. My old laptop wasn't exactly top-of-the-line, but I needed to edit a bunch of family videos. I started by looking for software that wasn't too complex but still had all the features I needed, like color correction, image stabilization (because my hands are not the steadiest:_:-)) and being able to add some cool slowmo effects.

I also wanted something that let me play around with the audio, like adding background music or a voice-over, without losing the original sound. Simple things like adding titles and mixing in some photos were on my checklist too. I searched around, read lots of reviews, and even tried out a few free trials. That's how I stumbled upon this mac video editor. It was a game-changer for me, and I'm pretty sure you can find something similar for other computer types by following the same steps.
