Trump threatens to keep shutdown going “months or even years”
  • President Trump and Democratic leaders emerged from their second White House meeting of the week with two very different versions of what happened behind closed doors, as the government shutdown reached the two-week mark. Hallie Jackson will have the two sides of the story on our broadcast tonight.
  • “Months or even years”: Trump confirmed that he “absolutely” said he would keep the government closed for, as Sen. Chuck Schumer characterized it, “a very long period of time—months or even years,” if he doesn’t get the billions he’s demanding for his proposed border wall. Trump added, “I don’t think it will, but I am prepared.”
  • “Contentious conversation”: Newly-elected House Speaker Nancy Pelosi described the meeting as “a lengthy and sometimes contentious conversation,” but indicated that “we made some progress.”
  • “Very, very productive”: The way Trump told it in the White House Rose Garden, “We had a very, very productive meeting and I think we've come a long way.” He said he had designated a group, which will include Vice President Mike Pence, to meet this weekend for negotiations.
  • National emergency?: Trump also said that he has considered going around Congress by declaring a national emergency in order to secure funds for his wall. “I can do it if I want,” he said before adding, “if we can do it through a negotiated process, we’re giving that a shot.” Asked if that was a threat to Democrats, Trump said, “I never threaten anybody.”

New Dem congresswoman calls to “impeach the mother------” and Trump fires back
  • Hours after she was sworn in as one of Michigan’s freshman members of Congress, Rashida Tlaib was seen in a video posted on social media taking aim at President Trump and telling a liberal crowd on Thursday night, “We’re gonna go in there and we're going to impeach the mother------.”
  • Tlaib, who is now the first Palestinian-American woman—and one of the first two Muslim women—ever elected to Congress, was unapologetic today about her profanity-laced remark, and co-wrote an op-ed stating, “The time for impeachment proceedings is now,” in the Detroit Free Press.
  • In the Rose Garden this afternoon, Trump said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi assured him Democrats were not aiming to impeach him. “You don't impeach people when they're doing a good job,” he said. Then he addressed Tlaib specifically. “I thought her comments were disgraceful,” Trump said. “I think she dishonored herself, and I think she dishonored her family.”
  • Pelosi downplayed the talk of impeachment during an MSNBC town hall today, calling it a “very divisive” topic. But she added that Tlaib’s remark was “nothing worse than the president has said.” Kristen Welker will report on the uproar tonight.

Stock market whiplash as U.S. jobs growth soars beyond expectation.
  • The U.S. economy added 312,000 jobs in December, far exceeding expectations, while the unemployment rate rose from a nearly 50-year low to 3.9 percent as more people entered the market in search of jobs. Tom Costello is monitoring the reactions on Wall Street, where the roller coaster continued today, as the Dow rebounded over 740 points after plunging yesterday.

Ellen DeGeneres urges Oscars to reinstate Kevin Hart as host
  • During an emotional interview that aired on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ this afternoon, comedian and actor Kevin Hart said he would reconsider his decision to step down as Oscars host, at the urging of DeGeneres.
  • Hart chose to step down last month after some of his old tweets, which many considered homophobic, resurfaced. Hart initially refused to say he was sorry, but later tweeted, “I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past.”
  • DeGeneres, who said that she was sensitive to Hart’s past tweets “as a gay person,” defended him on her show. “You have grown, you have apologized, you are apologizing again right now. You've done it. Don't let those people win. Host the Oscars.” DeGeneres also said she had called the Academy to lobby for Hart’s reinstatement, and that the Academy was open to the idea—though the Academy has not commented on that yet.
  • On our broadcast tonight, Stephanie Gosk will have all the highlights, and the backlash DeGeneres is facing for supporting Hart.

Flu season surging and taking a deadly toll on children
  • Twenty-four states are experiencing widespread flu activity, more than double the number of states from the previous week, according to a new warning from the CDC. Dr. John Torres will report on the toll it’s taking on children, with at least 13 pediatric deaths so far this season.

Police hunt for woman who killed nail salon owner after unpaid manicure
  • Morgan Chesky is following the twists and turns in Las Vegas, where police are searching for 21-year-old Krystal Whipple, who’s accused of using a stolen car to run over and kill a nail salon owner, and mother of three, who had chased her for failing to pay for a $35 manicure.

Two patients receive life-saving triple-organ transplants
  • Anne Thompson will share the remarkable story of two patients who are recovering after undergoing rare triple-organ transplants. Daru Smith and Sarah McPharlin, both age 29, each had failing hearts, livers and kidneys replaced last month in surgeries that lasted more than 17 and 20 hours, respectively. Once strangers, the pair now shares a unique connection and plans to share a meal together with their families after they’re released, the University of Chicago Medicine said.
