WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS (1914-1997)
was an American postmodernist author whose work influenced a broad range of popular culture and literature.  Jack Kerouac called him the "greatest satirical writer since Jonathan Swift" for his "lifelong subversion" of the moral, political, and economic systems of modern American society, while Norman Mailer declared him "the only American writer who may be conceivably possessed by genius."

In 1943, while living in New York City, he befriended Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, and out of their mutual influence grew the foundation of the Beat Generation, which was later a defining influence on the 1960s counterculture.  His experimental novels are sexually explicit and evoke, in deliberately erratic prose, a nightmarish, sometimes wildly humorous world.  Much of his work is semi-autobiographical, primarily drawn from his experiences as a heroin addict, as he lived throughout Mexico City, London, Paris and Tangier in Morocco, as well as from his travels in the South American Amazon.

Burroughs found success with his confessional first novel, JUNKIE (1953, later reissued as JUNKY), but he is best known for his third novel NAKED LUNCH (1959), a highly controversial work that was the subject of a court case after it was challenged as being in violation of the U.S. sodomy laws.  With Brion Gysin, he popularized the literary cut-up technique in works such as "The Nova Trilogy", one of his most radical experimentations with narrative form: THE SOFT MACHINE (1961), THE TICKET THAT EXPLODED (1962), and NOVA EXPRESS (1964).  In his later years, his "Red Night Trilogy" -- CITIES OF THE RED NIGHT (1981), THE PLACE OF DEAD ROADS (1983) and THE WESTERN LANDS (1987) -- featured time-travel adventures and was deemed to be shaping a new literary "mythography" (J. G. Ballard).
