![]() | Backdrop for this season: People don't realize the Great Depression for US Farming began in 1920's. During WW1 1914-1918 Massive production expansion happened for grain, dairy, etc . European farmers were drafted, food rationing. Billions of lbs of Russian grain exports vanished from world markets and US farmers took over that market share. The disorders and many civil wars continued through 1921. But by 1923 production outside USA returned and US farmers faced very very low prices, unable to pay bills. Woe to those with mortgages, who bought more land 1917 with sky high prices and profits. Overproduction caused Cheap food for non farmers, but not so great conditions for farmers. |
