The Silk Road traverses for thousands of kilometres between Europe and China. When East met West along Asia's silk route, the collision of culture and tradition changed the course of world history.
Winding tens of thousands of miles between China and Europe, the Silk Road enabled the exchange of goods and ideas between peoples that knew virtually nothing of each other. In the West, stood a continent built on lofty ideals and grand ambition. In the East, towered an empire of unimaginable size and splendor. For thousands of years these two civilizations had thrived in seeming isolation.
Two men stepped into the void. Marco Polo was lured by the promise of unprecedented wealth. When the Venetian merchant Marco Polo travelled to the East along the Silk Road in the thirteenth century, spices, fabrics and silk had already been traded between Europe and China for over a thousand years. This documentary tells the story of the famous traveller, who returned after a twenty-year stay in the Far East and wrote down his experiences.
Six hundred years later, the Swede Sven Hedin rediscovered the vast no-man's land of Central Asia. He braved the scorching heat of the Takla Makan desert and gained world fame. Hedin was driven by a thirst for adventure and the trappings of fame.
Confronted by the most daunting terrain on earth, both men went in search of a lasting connection between East and West, along the old Silk Road.
