46 silent era films from the Harold Lloyd collection. It includes 3 talkie films made after 1929. Lloyd is best known for his feature legnth film, Safety Last, where he manages to find himself dangling from the clock of a 9 story skyscraper. Roughly 75% of the films created during the silent film era have been lost, mostly because of fire and disintegrated film stock. This collection includes surviving copies of Lloyd's collection that have been reclaimed or restored.
Harold Lloyd ranks alongside Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton as one of the most popular and influential film comedians of the silent film era.

 | I'm the one that brought up comparisons of Lloyd in the Keaton post; someone else requested Lloyd, and boom, here it is, this is fantastic, thank-you so much! I remember as a kid, the Shakies Pizza Parlour in the early 70's with a weird business model, where the entire restaurant was almost completely in the dark, whereby the only light came from the kitchen area. The floor was bare polished concrete, and there was a projector in the middle of the room which constantly played the old silent films of Lloyd, Keaton, Chaplin, etc. There were no regular tables or booths to speak of, only traditional full sized wooden picnic tables with checkered plastic table cloths. This crazy business model is where I was first exposed to the classic silent movie stars. |
