Il volume venne scritto negli anni Cinquanta da Julia Child, moglie di un diplomatico stanziato in Europa. Proprio durante la sua permanenza a Parigi la donna ha fatto suoi i segreti della cucina transalpina e ha deciso di scrivere quanto imparato nel suddetto manuale.
