New Commentary with critics Troy Howarth and Nathaniel Thompson – Howarth, the author of So Deadly, So Perverse: 50 Years of Italian Giallo Films (Midnight Marquee Press, Inc, 2015), and Thompson, the owner of MondoDigital.com, team up once again to break down every aspect of a Euro-cult title. After being paired up on a fair number of tracks, the two have an easy back-and-forth, filling the time with behind-the-scenes factoids, actor histories, discussion of contemporary context, and fan musings. One of my favorite moments is when Thompson, as a video critic and collector, talks about the olden days of paying a premium price for a bootlegs of the Japanese Laserdisc in order to avoid the US VHS tapes horrible pan-and-scan cropping. Good times. I also appreciate Howarth’s habit of crediting English-language dub actors and listing some of the other Italian genre films where we might have heard their voices.
Commentary by filmmaker and Argento expert Thomas Rostock – Rostock takes a slightly more technical approach to his commentary (describing camera rigs and techniques, for instance), but also sets aside plenty of time for analytical discussion, anecdotes, and historical/contextual notes. My only problem with this nicely paced, full-bodied track is Rostock’s occasional habit of narrating on-screen action.
Deep into the Red (57:40, 4K) – An extended interview with Dario Argento coupled with an archive interview with star Daria Nicolodi. Argento recalls the events leading him to take up directing thrillers again, early drafts and rewrites, production and shooting locations, cinematographic tricks, production design, the cast, playing the killer’s hands, gore effects, hiring Goblin (then Cherry Five) after Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, and Genesis turned him down, editing, and release. Nicolodi chimes in with stories about meeting Argento, his direction as opposed to other filmmakers she’d acted for, and working with Hemmings.
The Medium Wore Black (20:55, 4K) – Actress Macha Méril (Helga the psychic) has a fun time remembering the making of Deep Red. She apparently couldn’t get a lot of parts because she looked too “Nordic,” so she was very grateful for the part and the chance to perform in English. She recalls the fun and trauma of being murdered on-screen, Argento’s use of color, the Turin locations, and consistently praises his approach to actors.
16 Years in Red (46:41, 4K) – Production manager Angelo Iacono speaks at length about his multiple collaborations with Argento and their longstanding, ongoing friendship, placing the most emphasis on Deep Red.
