Rio Cutler ha ucciso il padre, uomo violento che stava picchiando con violenza sua madre, poi morta per i colpi subiti. Suo zio Grant, fratello dell'uomo, accorre ma Rio si salva grazie al provvidenziale intervento della sorella Sara, che mette fuori combattimento il vendicativo parente. I due ragazzi fuggono insieme con l'intenzione di arrivare a Santa Fe, dove un'amica della defunta genitrice potrebbe dare loro asilo, ma l'incontro con la banda di Billy the Kid cambia le cose: il leggendario pistolero, di pochi anni più grande di lui, lo affascina enormemente. Il giorno dopo però arriva anche lo sceriffo Pat Garrett, che cattura il bandito e offre un passaggio a Rio e Sara, ignari che lo zio sia ora alle loro calcagna, pronto a tutto pur di fargliela pagare.
