Mike Roark, un dipendente del comune di Los Angeles, si appresta a passare una settimana con la figlia Kelly quando un lieve improvviso sisma cambia i suoi piani: insospettito dal calore emanato dal manto stradale, si rivolge alla collega sismologa Amy Barnes la quale, dopo la misteriosa morte di sette operai nel tunnel situato nel sottosuolo di Mac Arthur Park viene a scoprire di una possibile eruzione. La notte seguente l'intera metropoli va in black-out e un violento sisma porta la città in allerta poiché il lago di Mac Arthur Park ha cominciato a bollire: subito dopo i tombini schizzano in aria, comincia a piovere cenere, sassi e addirittura palle di fuoco; dal lago fuoriesce un'enorme colonna di fumo e poi l'eruzione infuria.
