In music, the undergrowth might describe all the small details and background parts that you at first don't notice, full of subtle textures, timbres and timing, both simple and incredibly complex at the same time. Although everyone plays their part, no two performances (or individuals) are the same and subtle quirks and anomalies are what make it all come alive.
Hayden Powell's Undergrowth assembles six musicians of differing background, age and musical experience, from jazz, folk and early music to electronic music and improvisation. The result is certainly Scandinavian, but with a broad musical horizon. Following the release of their album in November 2024, this new constellation will play its first concerts at the beginning of 2025.
The ensemble is led by trumpeter Hayden Powell, who has previously released four albums in his ow name and is a familiar figure on the Norwegian jazz scene. An accomplished musician, one of Powell's goals has been to write music that's not too technically demanding, leaving more space for interpretation, personal expression and untamed, thriving music
