Siamo nel 1979 e Michael Corleone, ormai settantenne, è riuscito a darsi un'immagine di rispettabilità tanto da ottenere, tramite un compiacente arcivescovo, perfino un'onorificenza dalla Santa Sede. Ora s'impegna in grosse operazioni finanziarie lecite, ma le altre "famiglie" cercano d'intromettersi. Privato e pubblico s'intrecciano drammaticamente, con gran finale in Italia dopo una Cavalleria rusticana a Palermo. Tono narrativo da fosco melodramma per l'ultimo capitolo del trittico, spericolati riferimenti alla cronaca più eclatante (Calvi, Papa Luciani), polso registico sicuro con alcuni momenti di grande efficacia spettacolare. Montaggio magistrale nel finale.
