Four decades have elapsed since the writing of the first edition, Principles and Practice of Ophthalmology. Quite a bit has happened since then! The time has clearly come for a reincarnation. When Gholam A Peyman, Donald R Sanders and I compiled and edited the initial version of this multi-volume book in 1980, we utilized the considerable talents of our colleagues and students, all of whom were based in North America. Many of them were affiliated with the University of Illinois in Chicago (our academic home at the time). Now, the Editor-in-Chief is Dr N Venkatesh Prajna, the Chief, Department of Education, and the Director of Academics at the justifiably famous Aravind Eye System (www.aravind.org), headquartered in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. He has obtained 116 totally new chapters (almost 3 times as many as in the 1980 version).
These chapters have been written by experts from 10 countries, not just the USA. The results reflect the latest opinions from international authorities on diagnostic and therapeutic principles and techniques. Indeed, many of the subjects represent knowledge that did not even exist at all in 1980, such as the following: innovative techniques of cataract surgery imaging modalities including OCT, for both retinal disease and glaucoma pharmacotherapy for retinal and macular diseases
new forms of medical and surgical therapy for glaucoma immunosuppression for uveitis and many others
