The Listening Service - Gustav Holst: Everything but The Planets
Remembered by many as the man who wrote The Planets suite, Holst was much more than that. From the Hymn of Jesus to Beni Mora, Tom Service and conductor Sakari Oramo discuss the English composer's life and works, proving there is more to explore than just his cosmic-inspired masterpiece.

Some phenomena only music can depict. From an age before space travel, Gustav Holst’s orchestral suite evoking the astrological associations of the planets represents one of classical music’s most extraordinary acts of imagination. Before heading into space, we are lured into the wilderness courtesy of music from conductor Sakari Oramo’s home country of Finland. The looping repetitions of Sibelius’s The Wood Nymph lead us shaman-like into a seductive woodland, while Lara Poe’s brand-new work for soprano and orchestra channels haunting Nordic cow-calling traditions. Student musicians from Helsinki and London unite for a Prom all about music’s conjuring power.
Presented by Petroc Trelawny, live from the Royal Albert Hall, London.
First broadcast: 25 August 2024
