Runyon's "old man" is neither a small-time Broadway crook (like the "I" of More Than Somewhat and Furthermore); nor a modest Brooklyn Babbitt like Joe Turp. He is a salty old commentator on men, women and manners, who says what he thinks with more force and frequency than tact.

Some called him a windbag and he agreed that "maybe he was, but was not costing the taxpayers anything which was more than a lot of other windbags could say." When he says "the local rumpots" were committing suicide with drink as with a gun, the statement "got our old man in very bad with the local rumpots"; and when he criticised the shape of Fred's sweetheart and said she was "a regular gee-whizzer of a clock-stopper," Fred punched him in the nose.
