| When you upscale 4:3 source make SURE you set output AR to 4:3! If you're doing it at 16:9 you either get stretched-out picture (which looks like shit!) or you maintain the correct 4:3 for the picture but the software adds black borders to fill-out the rest of that 16:9 set AR (the 1280-pixel width of 720p files). Those black borders cost data. Your files would be smaller and take less time to process without that wasted space. The correct resolution for 4:3 video outputted to 720p quality should be 960x720. |

 | I'm not part of any scene release group that will admit and enforce resolutions such as 960x720. I follow industry standards, in this case 1280x720p, where letterboxing keeps the correct AR for any player or device. Also, the black bars cost insignificant data (100kb/m tops) and won't really affect encoding time. |

| "Letterbox" is for displaying wide ratios on narrow screens. It is completely unnecessary for this application, as any widescreen display is fully capable of properly rendering & centering 4:3 video, leaving side space unrendered. You are wasting 320x720 of data every frame (25%). It's more data than you think. |
