A FOND FAREWELL

I profoundly regret to announce that these collections of Werner Heisenberg, Erwin Schrödinger, and Eric R. Kandel will be my final three torrents.

My circumstances are such that I find myself living in a building that I discovered to be controlled by a ruthless criminal gang.  Over the last two years I have been harassed and threatened continually because they fear their crimes (fraud certainly, but most probably also money laundering and prostitution, among others) being publicly exposed.  In recent months these cruel and sadistic attacks have become daily, and now hourly, occurrences.  The impact on my mental and physical well-being has become intolerable, and I cannot continue working under these conditions.

It has been my great pleasure to have served the file-sharing community for more than 10 years.  Researching, scanning, and building these torrent collections gave my life an entirely new and unexpected meaning, and I poured heart and soul into almost all of them.  I have been deeply gratified to receive your many kind comments and encouragement through the years, and it has been that support that has kept me going through some challenging times.  Without your help, I would never have got this far.

My seedbox subscription is scheduled to expire in February 2026, so you should have no difficulty downloading my collections at least until that time.  As always, if you find my torrents valuable I hope you will help to seed them for as long as you can.

"What thou lovest well remains,
the rest is dross
What thou lov'st well shall not be reft from thee
What thou lov'st well is thy true heritage"

* Eric R. Kandel - Principles of Neural Science and other works (10 books)

ERIC R. KANDEL (b. 1929)
is an Austrian-born American medical doctor who specializes in psychiatry, a neuroscientist and a professor of biochemistry and biophysics at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University.  He was a recipient of the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his research on the physiological basis of memory storage in neurons, sharing the prize with Arvid Carlsson and Paul Greengard.

While an undergraduate at Harvard, a place where psychology was dominated by the work of B. F. Skinner, Kandel became interested in learning and memory.  However, while Skinner championed a strict separation of psychology, as its own level of discourse, from biological considerations such as neurology, Kandel's work is essentially centered on an explanation of the relationships between psychology and neurology.

Kandel's award-winning research centred on the sea slug Apylsia, which has relatively few nerve cells, many of them very large and easy to study.  The sea slug also has a protective reflex to guard its gills, which Kandel used to study the basic learning mechanisms.  These experiments, combined with his later research on mice, established that memory is centred on the synapses, as changes in synaptic function form different types of memory.  Kandel showed that weak stimuli give rise to certain chemical changes in synapses; these changes are the basis for short-term memory, which lasts minutes to hours.  Stronger stimuli cause different synaptic changes, which result in a form of long-term memory that can remain for weeks.

Kandel is well known for the textbooks he has helped write, such as PRINCIPLES OF NEURAL SCIENCE.  First published in 1981 and now in its sixth edition (2021), the book is often used as a teaching and reference text in medical schools and undergraduate and graduate programs.

His popularized account chronicling his life and research, IN SEARCH OF MEMORY: THE EMERGENCE OF A NEW SCIENCE OF MIND, was awarded the 2006 Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Science and Technology.  His 2012 book, THE AGE OF INSIGHT — as expressed in its subtitle, The Quest to Understand the Unconscious in Art, Mind, and Brain, from Vienna 1900 to the Present — represents a wide-ranging historical attempt to place Vienna at the root of cultural modernism.
