The prototype of this Southern Californian group appeared in 1987 under the name “Virulence”. At first, the team, which at that time consisted of Ken Pucci (vocals), Scott Hill (guitar), Greg McCaughey (bass) and Ruben Romano (drums), cut hardcore in the spirit of Black Flag and Bl'ast.
After the release of the first and only album “If This Isn’t a Dream...” Pucci gave way to Glen Chivens, and the name of the group changed to “Fu Manchu”. In 1990, their debut single, “Kept Between Trees,” was released on Slap-a-Ham Records. Its sound was very similar to the work of Virulence, but soon the team began to drift towards hard rock of the 70s. Greg didn't like this trend and left, handing over the bass to Mark Abshire.
Somewhere at the same time, for unknown reasons, Chivens left the team. Taking advantage of the moment, Hill also assigned vocal duties to himself, and as compensation, lead guitarist Scott Voto was introduced into the lineup. With this comrade, “Fu Manchu” recorded three singles, after which Voto gave way to former Olivelawn drummer Eddie Glass.
Meanwhile, over the past period, the group managed to find its own sound, combining heavy riffs and a psychedelic mood. Rolling Stone magazine described the sound of the Fumanists as follows: “super heavy and bass happy Detroit rock 'n' roll is totally deep-fried, fuzzed out, window breakin', pot sellin', sleepin-in-the-van, skater metal". By 1994, serious record companies began to be interested in the team, and one of the “majors” allocated money for the musicians to record a test demo. However, “Fu Manchu” decided not to waste time and not sign a contract, but used the studio time allocated to them to prepare a real album. No One Rides For Free was released by a small independent label, Bong Load Custom, which also released their second full-length, Daredevil.
In the interval between the appearance of these records, Mark Abshire left his post, and the bass guitar passed to Brad Davis. In 1996, the band signed to Mammoth Records, where they debuted with the work “In Search Of...”. This album was Glass and Romano's last as Fu Manchu.
Both musicians joined their former colleague Abshire and formed the power trio Nebula. The vacancies at FM were filled by former Kyuss drummer Brant Björk and guitarist Bob Balch, who made their debut on the disc “The Action Is Go”. By this time, the team had already earned a good concert reputation, as it had the opportunity to perform with such groups as “Kyuss”, “Monster Magnet”, “Marilyn Manson”, “White Zombie”, “Melvins”, “Clutch” and “Corrosion of Conformity” " In 1998, Elastic released a compilation of early songs, Return To Earth 91-93. In addition, the compositions “Fu Manchu” were included in the collections “Burn One Up!” and "Music from the X-Games Volume 3".
At the turn of the millennium, three program works appeared, “Eatin’ Dust”, “King Of The Road” and “California Crossing”. All of them were received quite warmly, which did not stop Brant Bjork from announcing his departure from the group and the start of a solo career. The place on drums went to ex-Sunshine member Scott Reeder, whose name appeared on the first official Fu Manchu live album, Go For It... Live!
