Re: HDR It takes a really good TV to do HDR justice, any HDR! Until I got my new TV, I used to think HDR was just a gimmick, but it isn't. Though SDR on the same TV is very good too, but HDR is better. |
I'll start by saying that I found the overall result to be excellent. I have been longing to watch DS9 for a long time, but I just can't watch my DVDs on a 55 inch 4K TV, but if I had the possibility of watching it with the quality present here, I'd be a happy camper. As for the bad in the encodes, people need to remember that DS9 was either shot with, or had a layer of fog added in post production over the majority of the live action shots, which removes a lot of detail. In the matter of SDR vs HDR, I don't agree with some who think that it's just a gimmick, but I also think it's better used in productions that are shot using the technology natively, especially on TV shows, so in this particular case I think SDR is the way to go. What I really can't understand is if a private person can achieve this kind of improvement from a DVD or a streaming source, which is no doubt compressed, then why in blazes Paramount, who has the original uncompressed masters, doesn't do the same with DS9 and Voyager, at least for streaming? It can't be that expensive for them. |
The will is not there, that's why. Also better qualkty will show up a lot of flaws, that are otherwise masked. |
Absolute fantastic! Version 4k brilliant. have zou more please. Great job. Thanks |
Is there any reason 25fps was chosen? very weird for this content, was it assumed playback on 25/50 hz tvs? |
i never really liked ds9 and stopped watching it after a bit. however, these rips look so fantastic, all of them both versions, that i found myself very deeply engaged in every episode! great work lad great work! |
Bloody great work again kentajalli. The 960's you've been doing on DS9 & Voyager are already great, but these 4k's are a step up! The HDR Version pop's really well on my Samsung, but then again, the SDR looks great too. Thanks kentajalli, really appreciate your efforts fellow human xXx |
Thank you for the time and effort involved in experimenting with these. |
Great work, I would stick with SDR, not because HDR is a gimmick but simply due to the limits of the source material. |
Thank you, love the experiment I'm sure there are a lot of details to correct and fine tune the encoding.. lots of time and work as I dabble myself when I find the time... What's up with Odo's teeth and irises? (28:28 - 28:40 mark) Is that an encoding glitch or that's how it's in the original DVDs? |
Naah! Odo is least of the problems. Take a look at first and last two pictures. |
Hmmm quite impressive grasshopper.. You will take the stone from my hand soon enough... |
Keep on tinkering, nothing wrong with that. If people want it they will grab it and ask for more :) |
Can you tell us what the color gamut and luminance is for these? I couldnt read it from the file and it affects how I playback HDR, is this like DCI-P3 or full bt.2020, and whats the peak nits? THANKS! |
There are few versions of DS9 available. I used the PAL DVD for this one, so it is 25fps. 24fps and 25fps versions have fluid smooth movements. All modern TVs can manage, 24fps, 25fps, 50fps, 60fps. Regarding colour, it is supposed to be bt2020 but everything is tweaked to get the best mapping. I did it for fun. |
Stick with SDR encodes. HDR is just another gimmick, like 3D TV was 10-15 years ago |
In my opinion, everything should be encoded in SDR. HDR is just another gimmick to get us to replace all our expensive equipment until the next "gotta have it" technology comes out - remember the 3D TV gimmick that was being pushed 10-15 years ago? Is 3D cool?...yes. Is HDR cool?...yes. Is it worth replacing all your expensive and perfectly good video equipment for?...no. Agree with me or not, I don't care - it's just my opinion. |
HDR is a gimmick because... other things were. Refuted: HDR isn't a gimmick because some other thing also wasnt a gimmick (LOL.) DCI-P3 is better than bt.709... feel free to argue in futility. |
