Overview: Winner of the 1972 Tanizaki Prize—A middle-aged ex-career civil servant, having refused to transfer to the Ministry of Defence on quasi-ideological grounds, is now working as an executive in an electrical company. He compounds this mid-life crisis by falling in love with a young fashion model and marrying her. This double rebellion becomes complicated still further by the discovery that his new wife’s grandmother is an ex-jailbird; she murdered her estranged husband ‘by accident.’
Saiichi Maruya has produced a comedy which at one level is a very funny entertainment, at another deals with serious political and social ideas, and at yet another is a masterly portrait of aspects of modern Japan which are seldom considered abroad. Those who think of the Japanese as rigidly conformist will have to think again.
