Referring to Lewis Carroll's Red Queen from Through the Looking-Glass, a character who has to keep running to stay in the same place, Matt Ridley demonstrates why sex is humanity's best strategy for outwitting its constantly mutating internal predators. The Red Queen answers dozens of other riddles of human nature and culture - including why men propose marriage, the method behind our maddening notions of beauty, and the disquieting fact that a woman is more likely to conceive a child by an adulterous lover than by her husband.
Brilliantly written, The Red Queen offers an extraordinary new way of interpreting the human condition and how it has evolved.
Thank you for this miok I read this some while ago, and whilst Ridley provides some clear and cogent arguments for his opinions, he also makes a few factual errors in his science -- a common problem with non-researchers -- and overlooks some rather obvious exceptions to one or two of his theories. To be fair, this was first published before a number of those issues were covered by the research. It needs a new edition. This isn't a "bad" book, it has a lot going for it, and it's certainly up there with work such as Dawkins' "The Blind Watchmaker"... well worth the download, but don't take everything that Dr. Ridley says as certain: A) science is never 100%, and Ridley B) Ridley definitely isn't. Luvya miok, thanks again
You're welcome LL, nothing stays current for long. I'm sure there's been a lot of change in this area since the original publishing of this book. As long as some knowledge can be gleaned, the time wasn't wasted.
