The death of George Simenon's daughter, Marie-Jo.
Simenon and a police inspector [a thinly disguised
Maigret] investigate the death. Did she commit suicide
or was she murdered?
Background
In 1978 Simenon's estranged wife Denyse published
a bitter memoir of their marriage. Soon after, Simenon's
troubled daughter committed suicide.
First of all Simenon 'believed' that it was murder. He
came round to accepting the suicide verdict, but then
wrote a biting response to his wife's memoir in which
he blamed her for the death.
