BBC R4 Documentary - 'The Speech That Shook The Kremlin'
Presented by Tim Whewell
Produced by Leonida Kruzinisky
Broadcast February 24, 2006
Coded from tape at 128/44.1

February 14, 1956, Nikita Khrushchev convened the first Party
Congress since Joseph Stalin's death in 1953.

On February 25, 1956 - the Congress' last day - Khrushchev made
a four-hour speech which discredited Stalin. In it he admitted
that the Party had made errors, and detailed the enormity of
the crimes committed under Stalin.

The speech was thought so incendiary that it was not published in
Russia until 1988 when Mikhail Gorbachev agreed that it should be
under his Glasnost policy.

Tim Whewell examines background to, and ramifications of, this
significant 1956 event.
