In existence for a hundred years, Grimley Colliery Brass band is as old as the mine. But the miners are now deciding whether to fight to keep the pit open, and the future for town and band looks bleak. Although the arrival of flugelhorn player Gloria injects some life into the players, and bandleader Danny continues to exhort them to continue in the national competition, frictions and pressures are all too evident. And whose side is Gloria actually on?

This movie is very close to my heart. Perhaps because I lived in Yorkshire (where the story unfolds) during those years. The years of miner strikes and the widespread pit closures that followed. I saw and witnessed first hand, the devastation that the mass unemployment brought about to the entire community. How lively, happy villages and towns, turned into ghost-town quickly.
I love this movie for personal reasons, but as a Drama, it can stand on its own two feet.
Movie was probably made for TV, and some scenes were not shot in best quality, but this version is, by far, the best version I have seen.

 | I shall redo where eagles dare. I understand that the missing 2 mins would make it not suitable as a "collectors item" , but that two minutes is hardly crucial to the story. I think as it is, it is still 99% enjoyable. Each movie takes me a say to do, I can re-do where eagles dare, or do a new movie. |
