In 1980 the black Falashas in Ethiopia are recognised as genuine Jews. In turn they are secretly carried to Israel. The day before the transport the son of a Jewish mother dies. In his place and with his name (Schlomo) she takes a Christian 9-year-old boy. Upon arrival this second mother dies. Schlomo is adopted by a good family but remains depressed until he secretly sends a letter to his real mother. From the beginning he experiences large and small racist difficulties. In his teens he and Sarah fall in love. Her father is an extreme racist. Schlomo tries to gain "real Jewishness" by winning a competition in Bible interpretation. No change of Sarah's father's attitude. Disappointed he goes to the police and reports himself as not being a Jew. But the police officer just gives him a scolding. "The newspapers are full of that stuff, the Falashas are no Jews. Now they begin to believe it themselves." His adoptive parents send him to France to study medicine. When he afterwards marries Sarah she loses her family and her status as a "white Jew". But he dares not tell her the truth until she becomes pregnant. Vai e vivrai, film drammatico diretto da Radu Mihăileanu, è la storia di una madre e di un figlio, costretti a vivere in un campo profughi alla fine degli anni ’80 e poi a separarsi per sempre. Siamo in Africa e il Mossad, l’agenzia di intelligence dello Stato israeliano, sta organizzando l’Operazione Mosè insieme alla CIA e all'NSA, per trasferire un gruppo di ebrei etiopi in Israele, attraversando il Sudan. Qui, in un campo profughi vive un bimbo etiope, ma di religione cristiana, insieme alla sua mamma. Terrorizzata che suo figlio sia in pericolo perché non ebreo, la donna lo affida a un’altra madre, con la speranza che quando gli agenti del Mossad arrivino, lo scambino per un bambino ebreo e lo lascino fuggire. Il piccolo, che ora si chiama Shlomo (Moshe Agazai) riesce così a raggiungere Israele e viene adottato dalla famiglia Harrari.
Crescendo decide di studiare religione e si innamora di Sarah (Roni Hadar), ma non è ben visto dal padre di lei per via del colore della sua pelle. Diventato adulto (Sirak Sabahat), vive giorno dopo giorno custodendo il segreto di essere cristiano e, in cuor suo, vorrebbe tornare in Sudan dove ha lasciato la madre. Dopo un breve periodo a Parigi, dove studia medicina, l’uomo fa ritorno in Israele e sposa Sarah. Tormentato, però, dalla grande menzogna sulla sua fede religiosa, un giorno decide di dire tutta la verità alla sua famiglia…
CURIOSITÀ SU VAI E VIVRAI: Il film ha ottenuto un Premio César per la migliore sceneggiatura originale e un Premio Lumière nella sezione Premio del pubblico mondiale (entrambi nel 2006). È stato incluso tra i "1001 film da vedere prima di morire", a cura di Steven Schneider.
